great great grandfather search

My great great grandfather Ulick Bourke was born approximately May 22, 1821 in County Mayo. This is according to his death certificate filed in Chicago, Illinois USA in December, 1908. He was Catholic, but I don't know which parish. Other information I have suggests his father may have been Edward Joseph Bourke. I have been unable to locate any confirming information about his birth, and would appreciate any suggestions.

I searched the subscription site Roots Ireland and the earliest baptismal record on their database was a Ulick Burke baptized in Aghagower RC parish in 1830. Likely this is not your ancestor. RC parishes in Co. Mayo generally have records starting later than 1821 so very likely a baptismal record for your Ulick Bourke is not available.

Bourke/Burke was a very common surname in Co. Mayo.

Do you have any other information?

Hello Richard,

I found this transcription of a record on find my past it says Eulick Burke was baptised 1 Oct 1822, parents John Burke and Bridget Lamb, in Swineford Parish, Mayo. This might be your Ulick. With a quick browse I didn’t actually find the baptism in the original record, but I will give you the link to Swineford baptisms at that time, if you want to search it yourself.

I don’t have a RootsIreland account, so maybe someone with one of those can help you further. I will keep on looking for the original baptism, and I’ll notify you if I find anything.

Eileen what a great find.

Per Ancestry.

1870 Census. He was married to Mary Lavelle from Catskills, New York. Records show he was from Mayo but not the exact location and father. I did not find a record on RootsIreland. Richard you might want to request a death certificate from the State of Illinois to see if it provides more info. Also a marriage record from New York. Maggie and Martin were both born there.

Martin's name is not on the 1860 census. Could he have been a nephew? Mary's mother is on both the 1860 and 1870 censuses.

Eileen,

The family search box is definitely my gg grandfather as he passed in 1908 in Chicago, was married to Mary Lavelle, and is buried at Calvary Cemetery!

I don't believe he ever lived in NYC, as he owned a furniture business in Chicago.

I have a copy of the the IL death certificate, which provided the approximate date of birth.

I want to contact family search and find out how they determined his father's name (Ulick), and whether there is any information about a mother.

Thanks so much!

Richard
