Granddaughter of Thomas Mellick born in Hells Kitchen in 1908-ish

I am looking for any information about the Mellick family who had a daughter named Anita Leigh who had a son out of wedlock in Hell's Kitchen, then left the boy, Thomas Mellick to be raised by her parents in America. He later married a Welsh woman named Caroline "Peggy" Halsted and had three sons, James, Thomas, and Richard, my father. My dad has been looking for information about our Irish roots. It would be amazing if somebody could help us with this. Thank you so much! Sláinte!

Hi,

Before I research further, is this your family? It looks likes Thomas and Caroline were both born in New Jersey?

Hi Mary,

Yes, that is the information for my grandfather, his wife(she passed away the Christmas before I was born) and his children (my uncles). Lee & Bridget were Thomas' grandparents. I am looking for information about Lee & Bridget's lineage, and their daughter, Anita Leigh's information. I have information about Thomas & Carolyn and their descendents but not their ancestors. This is what I'm looking for. Thank you for your help!

Maybe Levi. It looks like the family plot. I went back several generations of this family and they have a long history in New Jersey. If they were from Ireland, it was perhaps in the 1700s or earlier.

Based on Thomas' Social Security record above, his mother's last name was Gibbons. Bridget was born in New York. I found a Bridget Gibbons living in New York in 1880. She might be your Bridget Mellick? Her father had passed away. Both parents came from Ireland. Did not find where they came from.

I have not found any info on Anita. Did she go by a different name? Get married? Live in a different state?

If I identified the correct Mellick family, I thought I would send more info I found on Ancestry. Levi's parents were John Mellick and Elizabeth Linn. John fought in the Civil War.

Thank you so much! This makes more sense now. Also thank you for finding Thomas family's names. From what we know of my grandfather, the names and dates you have found make a lot of sense. I will start looking for Barbara Gibbons now. Thank you so much!

ladysarahambly

Good morning Mary,

Is there any way to find out where in Ireland Barbara Gibbons came from? My dad remembers seeing the name Bridget on my grandpa's paperwork but didn't know the connection.

Is it possible this family came from Mount Mellick?

Thank you for your help!

vertigooct15

I can't confirm they were from Mt. Mellick. I found an 1868 bank statement for a Barbara Gibbons in New York. I don't know if this is your Barbara, but it identified her from Galway??

In the US City Directories, 1868-1882, Barbara is identified as a widow, spouse's name James.
