Graham of Co. Laois

I descend from Archibald Graham, emigrant to Victoria, Australia in 1840. Australian sources indicate he was born in Co. Laois c1819, son of George Graham, "military man"and Mary Graham. I can find no baptism for Archibald and no marriage for George and Mary. George's army record reveals that he was born in Offerlane, Laois in 1799. I have found the baptism of Archibald's sister Mary Graham at Mountmellick, Laois in 1825. The parents are recorded as George Graham and Mary CLUBINE. I can find no earlier record of either.

I would welcome any information about the name Clubine. Is it:

  1. A surname in its own right, apparently rare in Ireland now.
  2. A variant of CLIBBORN, which does occur in and near Mountmellick in the 18th & 19th centuries. I believe that the name Clibborn came to Ireland in the 1640s from England.
  3. A variant of the Irish Cluvane or similar (I'm unsure of the correct Irish spelling).

Any information would be much appreciated.

John:

Mary Graham was baptized August 10 1826. Her mother's maiden name was shown as Clubrin on the parish register https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000634513?locale=en#page/49/mode/1up

George and Mary had at least five other children:Ellen 1831 William 1834 Bridget 1837 Ann 1838 John 1841. For all five records, Roots Ireland transcribed the mother's maiden name as Clubrin.

Clubrin does not show up in the Griffiths Valuation or the 1901 census anywhere in Ireland. Maybe another volunteer will have more information.

Hi John,

Since you have Mountmellick ancestry, you might be interested in a memoir of growing up in Mountmellick: WE WERE RICH AND WE DIDN'T KNOW IT: A MEMOIR OF MY IRISH BOYHOOD (Gallery Books/Simon & Schuster, 2019) by Tom Phelan. Phelan has also written many critically acclaimed novels. See www.tomphelan.net.
