Gleeson Newport Tipperary

Hi.

I've been reviewing research I made some months ago when I first started to look at my ancestry. One item I'd not particularly looked at was a birth record in Newport. At the time my ancestry pointed towards Ballyhaunis but the birth record links a few names to other pieces of information I've found:

Henry Gleeson (for some reason changed to Michael on various records) born in 1798 in Newport to Michael (Michaelis) Gleeson and Ellen Wixstead. The reason I'm revisiting this is because one of the sponsors is an Elizabeth Burke. The connection for Gleesons to the Burke family is quite strong. We have a DNA link to Denis Gleeson who was transported to Australia for murder along with his associate Cornelius Burke. Cornelius was from Pallasgreen East County Limerick, not a massive distance. Cornelius and Denis were imprisoned in Nenagh jail before transport to Australia. It's a close link but as yet no DNA connections have been made to Pallasgreen (haven't found anyone with a Gedmatch Kit as yet).

Hi Patricia

Thank you for your reply. I'm really hoping that someone might have either Burke connections in the same area that could link Denis Gleeson to my Gleeson ancestor.

The DNA link comes from an Ancestry connection and is fairly strong.

I'm struggling with exact birthdates for Denis (he had a son and obviously called him Denis!!). Cornelius Burke (could Burke also have a Bourke spelling?) was born in 1818 so I've checked around that period and found a Denis Gleeson baptism in 1820 with a mother called Mary Bourke in Herbertstown which is a couple of hours from Old Pallas if you walk. So.... maybe Bourke/Burke was a cousin from his mothers side?

From records it looks as though Denis born around 1820, his father was also Denis. Maybe it was the most popular name at that time but it doesn't make things easy!! The only other point that came up as strange was that the birth in 1820 was in hospital when I'd have thought it would have been a home birth?
