Gibbons - 2 different families!

My greatgrand parents were from 2 different GIBBONS families! - both in County Mayo!

----------Mary Gibbons(1832) was daughter of David Gibbons(1808) and Mary Ann Moran(1810). They lived near Westport,Mayo. Her father David Gibbons belonged to a family of shipbuilders in Ireland.

Mary'ssiblings: Thomas 1825, Bridget 1830, Michael 1832, David1834, Martin1840, Anne 1843, and Ellen

1845.

Mary was in Bedern,York,England whenshe married John Gibbons 19 Oct 1852. (have copy of marriage

certificate). They had a daughter Margaret, abt 1853, Hull, England. They then emigrated to the US abt 1854

andsetteledin Northumberland County, Pennsylvania. For a long period Mt.Carmel was their home town.

They had7 morechildren: Anna M. Dec 1855, Patrick Henry 26 Mar 1860, John F. 01 Dec 1862 , Mary Dec 1864, Ellen Aug1865, Catherine Cecilla 15 May 1869 (my grandmother), and Thomas abt 1870. All of

these children were born in Mt.Carmel, Northumberland, Pennsylvania.

---------- John Gibbons(1833) was son of WALTER GIBBONS (1808) and ??? (maybe Bridget or Margaret)

BARRETT. They lived near Newport, Mayo. His siblings: Patrick abt 1825, Mary abt 1836, Catherine Dec

1849, Walter abt 1830.

---------- Much of my data is from a published Biography of my grandfather William J. Brown whose wife was

Catherine Cecelia Gibbons. The Bio was from "History of Schuylkill County Pennsylvania". I have

recorded verified documentation of most of the information in the biography. Both of the Gibbons families

were of the Catholic faith. One of the families may have relationship connection with the family of James

Cardinal Gibbons. His father, Thomas (1800) and mother, Bridget Walsh(1803)were also from Mayo

(Gortnacullin, Tourmakeady).

I will be very grateful for any information on both the David Gibbons family and the Walter Gibbons family. Thank you!

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I searched on Roots Ireland and could not find any baptismal records around 1832-1833 for children of Walter Gibbons or David Gibbons.   I looked on the Tithe Applotment listing and the only David or Walter Gibbons records were in Burrishoole civil parish which includes Newport.    http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/index.jsp     The records for Burrishoole are from 1832.  Unfortunately, the RC parish records for that area start in 1872. I know you mentioned that the Walter Gibbons family was from Newport but perhaps the David Gibbons family was also.

Hello,
My great grandparents Myles and Maria Gibbons we’re also both county, mayo and both named Gibbons. Myles was from near Westport and Maria was from Castlebar.
Myles came to the US in about 1850 and fought in the Civil War. He and Maria married in 1860 in Lafayette Missouri after the war they lived in Scranton Pennsylvania, where he was a coal Miner until 1879, when they moved to Chicago. He lived to be about 85 years old. He worked in the foundry in Chicago and then had a patron his job until he was about 75 working for the city of Chicago as a caulker on water pipes. My grandfather, John Gibbons was influential in Chicago politics, and was able to obtain a job for him.
My mother was from the north side of Chicago, Illinois, and her family were Fitzgerald’s on her mother’s side.
Both of Gibbons and Fitzgerald‘s were allies of William the conqueror, and Gibbons were related to William. They fought at the battle of Hastings and eventually wound up in Ireland. The Gibbons family name was originally deBurgh, but was later Anglicize to Burke, and one of the Burkes was named Gilbert or Gib. That is how the family name eventually became Gibbons.
I wonder if you’ve ever heard any of this history.

William Myles Gibbons
