Gatelys from Roscommon

My greatgrandfather John J (sometimes P) Gately was born in Roscommon Ireland in 1862. Hearrived in Boston in approximately 1886. His parents were John P Gately and Mary Curley - I am told they came from Roscommon but I don't have any specific location. He had two brothers - William born in July 1867 and Thomas born in 1855 or 1865. I'm not sure if the entire family came to the United States together.

John married Catherine Rogerson in Boston in 1888. I have no information on where in Ireland she is from. Their son Edward, born in Boston in 1895 was my grandfather.

I'd appreciate any suggestions or help in locating where exactly in Roscommon my Gately family came from!

Thank you.

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Not having any luck with your family. Searched on Roots Ireland for all three brothers with father John and mother with surname Curley and got no record. I even searched broader for all of Ireland and did not get a record. The closest record for John on Roots Ireland is below. I'm wondering if one piece of information for your family is incorrect.

Gately was a fairly common surname in Roscommon and found mostly in the southern part of the county.

Thank you - not sure where to go from here!

I did a wider search on Roots Ireland looking for all Gately children with a mother with the surname Curley and I got two baptismal records (not your names) where the father was Patrick and the mother Bridget Curley. This family was down in Taughmaconnell parish.

You may want to consider autosomal DNA testing.

I have done the autosomal DNA testing but haven't really had any luck!

Roger,

Just revisiting this.  This might be the record.  I only found one thing that said the mother's name was Mary Curley, and with the way the handwriting was it is a possibility that this is the record.  My next question is about the date of baptism - the birth date says 25 May 1861, but the date of baptism is 11 Nov 1111.  What are your thoughts?  I'd like to take a look at the baptism record.  It is Dysart/Tisrara?

And one final question - I have done the autosomal testing - do you know of any groups in Roscommon that I can contact?

Thank you.

Cathy:

I think Roots made an errot because normally the birth date is not shown and the baptismal date is listed. John was baptized Mary 25 1861. Go to this link  http://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000633899#page/34/mode/1up

The record is on the very bottom of the left hand page and to complicate matter the records are in Latin. The transcriber came up with Conamon as the mother's maiden name but after Cona  not sure about the rest.

I don't know of any Roscommon DNA groups. I don't know the company you tested with but did you load your raw DNA data to Gedmatch? www.gedmatch.com

Hello, I just wanted to correct my spelling, born Tisararah Parrish. The gravestone does have an h at the end of the Village name. There are Gatelys currently in Tisarara, Roscommon County Ireland today!

My great great grandmother is Mary Agnis Gately. She was born in 1876 in Ireland. I’ve been told my family came from Roscommon. Not sure when she made her way to Boston, but she had her first child in Boston in 1898. Would love to see if there is a connection.

warm regards,

There are some civil birth records for a Mary Gately around 1876. Do you know her parents names?
