Gannon from Co Roscommon 1840s.....to US and India

Any info to add?

(Maria(Stapleton m Denis (Dionysius) Gannon 1820s in Killukin  (probably)RC Parish.

Mary and five children (Catherine, 11/12/1827; Mary, 14/7/1832; John, 7/10/1834;  Bridget Annie, 11/9/1837;  Denis (Dionysius) 18/6/1843..went to the US c 1848/9 but probably not all together. I have checked US Immigration lists.

Husband Denis must have died in Ireland c 1847/8?

Oldest son,my ggrandfather Thomas, 11/12/1925, joined East India Army as a gunner and sailed to India from Cobh in 1849..

Joined Nizam of Hyderabad's army, eventually commissioned in the Royal Artillery, and died in India.

I have info on the US branch and on the India branch but am looking for any info  re  Denis(Dionysius) Gannon and his wife, Mary Stapleton, his siblings and parents..

Have consulted: Tithe Applotment Books (Denis and Gilbert Gannon and a Stapleton in Ballyculleen -not Bollincullen- in 1835),Griffiths, Family Hitory Society, Irish and US Census, US Immigration, Irish Parish Records online, Lewis map of Ireland 1837 and Dictionary of Townlands.

Went to Killukin last summer: absolutely nothing there, just a pub, not open, no ruins, nothing. In Carrick-on-Shannon I was told the pub is really jumping after 9pm! Am I on the wrong track?

Welcome to ireland Reaching Out!

The RC parish records for Killukin (as you likely know) only go back to 1811 for baptisms and 1825 for marriages. I don't think you will find any further church records for Denis Gannon or Mary Stapleton unless they had much younger siblings who were born after June 24 1811. It would be hard to confirm that they were siblings. http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0554

Sorry I could not help further. You have done an excellent job researching your family.

I found some Baptisms for the Children in Latin for Catharinam, Thomam, Johannnem , Brigidam and Dyonisium with Mariae Stapleton and Dyonisii Parish Records available on Familysearch.org.  Had to sift though the copies - Parochial Registers of Killukin (Boyle Barony, Roscommon 1811-1881) 500 odd pages but will find them on Image 71 (T), Image 82(C), Image 149 (J), Image 182(B), Image 240 (D).    No idea yet of when Dennis and Maria got married to search for that but could hazard guesses.  There are trees now with Gannons and a little of Doyles (Cork) on Ancestry UK now.  I was advised by Parishes to contact Strokestown Heritage who may be able to provide more details of family.  Would they be able to provide information of parents marriage/origins (believe to be Roscommon) and when emigrated to USA and India in Thomas's case.  We think Dennis Snr may have died either in Ireland or Liverpool awaiting ship to USA?
