Francis McElhern/Campbell Kildallan Armagh

I am reaching out for help regarding Francis McElhern (plus variants). I have him born 1807 in Kildallan, Armagh. He was married to Mary Campbell. One of their sons John Campbell was born 1829 in Armagh and married Susan McLushie, from Blantyre Lanarkshire in 1854. Anecdotally I understand Francis changed his name to Campbell, hence his son is Campbell, in order to find work more easily in Scotland. (Is this an old wives tale??) Other ancestry trees have the same John and Francis but with different birth dates, so I am uncertain if I have the right lineage. Trouble is searching irish records is proving difficult the further back I go, any pointers would be appreciated.

I searched the subscription site Roots Ireland and located three baptismal records for children of Francis McElhern and Mary Campbell. The RC parish was Killeavy Lower

Mary baptized March 22 1836

James baptized Mary 31 1838

Michael baptized April 2 1841

Records for this parish start in January 1835 so there would be no record for John or other older children. No specific location was shown. I did not locate a marriage record.

The 1860 Griffiths Valuation did show two McElhern record in Killevy civil parish.

Thank you Roger for your efforts, its much appreciated.

I believe there was a Cathrin McIlheron also, in the 1901 census Michael is shown as head of household and Cathrin as Sister.

Regards

Ian
