Francis ( Frank ) Corrigan 1922 - 1990 Clogher

Good morning all, hope everyone is well and safe. 

I am trying to research my wifes family history and was hoping someone can fill in some blanks for me.

My wifes Father was Francis Corrigan who we believe was born in or near Clogher. He was born in 1922 and died in Bristol , England in 1990. However he was buried in Clogher and there was a wake in 'the pub on the high street' which may have been owned by some relatives. The inscription on the gravestone at St Macartans Cathedral reads as below although I assume the spelling of Francis is a typo

IN LOVING MEMORY OF
PATRICK CORRIGAN (SHANCO)
DIED 15TH OCT 1958 AGED 70 YEARS
HIS WIFE ELLEN
DIED 24TH SEPT 1986 AGED 95 YEARS
THEIR SON FRANCIE
DIED 10TH FEB 1990 AGED 67 YEARS

From what people tell me, Francis had a brother called William who was married to Anne and they had a son called Patrick - but cant be 100% sure about this and can find no references.

Their father was Patrick Corrigan who was married to Ellen McCann at St Marys Roman Catholic Church in Clogher in July 1919 per the marriage certificate of Francis from 1961. I believe Francis and his wife Bridgit left shortly after marrying and moved to Manchester. There is a connection with Bristol and I think it may be through William but cant be sure. 

Does this ring any bells with anyone locally, I am hoping their is still a strong family connection in Clogher who we may be able to connect to

It’s not our policy on Ireland Reaching Out to directly provide information on living people so I can’t help you identify anyone who might be alive. However I can confirm when Patrick & Ellen married. Here’s their marriage certificate (it was 1918 in St. Mary's chapel):

Both lived in Ballyscally. This looks to be them in the 1911 census:

Births within the past 100 years are not on-line. They are open to the public though and you can get them from GRONI in Belfast.  However what looks to be their first child has slipped in, just outside the 100 year rule. They look to have had a daughter Roseanne Corrigan born 26.1.1920, registered in Clogher. You can view her original certificate on-line on the GRONI website, using the “search registrations” option:

Probate abstracts for Patrick & Ellen’s fathers:

Administration of the estate of William M'Cann late of Ballyscally County Tyrone Farmer who died 15 May 1892 granted at Armagh to Rose M'Cann the Widow

Administration of the Estate of Patrick Corrigan late of Ballyscally County Tyrone Farmer who died 17 February 1916 granted at Armagh to Anne Corrigan the Widow.

Griffiths Valuation for 1860 lists 3 Corrigan farms beside each other in Ballyscally in 1860 (plots 11 - 13) held by Patrick senior, Michael junior and Patrick junior. Those parcels of land today are a mile or two south of Clogher on the Ashfield Rd.

Are you aware of any further details on Roseanne such as a marriage? It's possible Roseanne became Anne and married a William ? Ancestry.co.uk doesnt have any reference to her so I wasn't aware of her until now, andy

Marriages in Northern Ireland up to 1945 are viewable on the GRONI site. I saw 4 involving women named Rose or Anne Corrigan between 1936 and 1945. None married a William.  For those after 1945 you need to contact GRONI, as they are not on-line anywhere.

Patrick Corrigan’s death in 1958 is viewable on-line. You might want to see who the informant was and where Patrick was living.  His wife and son’s deaths are open to the public but not on-line so you need to contact GRONI to get copies of them. The gravestone inscription in St McCartan's indicates that there’s a family connection with Shanco. That’s a townland near Ballyscally. Directory Enquiries (postcode BT76) should help you find some Corrigans there today. 

Probate abstract:

Corrigan Patrick of Shanco Clogher county Tyrone farmer died 15 October 1958 Probate Londonderry 22 January to Francis McConnell farmer. Effects £415 14s. 10d.

The will itself is in PRONI. They will copy it for you for a fee or you could get a researcher to copy it.

You might want to ask PRONI to look the family up in the 1939 Register to see who was living in Ballyscally & Shanco then. Unlike England, the 1939 Register for Northern Ireland is not on-line but it is held in PRONI and if you supply the surname and townland they will normally do a look up for you, subject to redacting details of anyone who might still be alive.

Belfast Newsletter of 3rd March 1924 reports that the previous Saturday Patrick Corrigan of Ballyscally and his brother were training a young horse to haul a cart. A van passed by and the horse took fright and became unmanageable. Patrick was thrown to the ground and the wheel passed over his leg inflicting a serious fracture.  The runaway horse was later caught near Augher by Sgt Kirkland RUC.

Tyrone Constitution of 18th March 1881 reports an inquest on William Corrigan of Ballyscally who was killed by a fall from a tree.  William was a small farmer who lived with his father and 2 sisters. He had been up  a ladder chopping branches off a tree. His father gathered the chopped branches and took them back to the house. Returning to the tree he found his son lying on the ground speechless, the ladder having apparently moved, causing  William to fall. He was carried into the house but never recovered consciousness and died 2 hours later.

Once again, many thanks for your reply.

Frustratingly, i can see references on the UK electoral register 2003 - 2010 to Mrs Annie Ter Corrigan and Mr William Jam Corrigan both of 9 Shanco Road, Clogher, BT76 0HN

I would assume that the Jam is James but could guess what Ter is short for. 

Annie Corrigan has a birth date of between 1936 and 1938 and William is between 1930 and 1932. So its the right ages, names and location.

I have to assume this is the elusive Uncle Willy and Aunty Ann.

Sorry Andy, nearly forgot, francie also had another sister called sadie she passed away about 5 years ago, I think she was in contact with your father in law francie also another brother jonnie, big family they had in fact all those siblings had big families.
