FOLEY - SHEEHY

I am looking for information which links me to a PATRICK J SHEEHY. Who was his mother ??

C 1900 Patrick J. wrote a postcard ( undated,  no address) to his Dear Uncle who was my grandfather,  Timothy FOLEY .

It was written in a very fluent hand and contained mature thoughts ( Boer War, Home Rule). He mentioned another uncle still alive but  not one alresdy deceased.  Signed his Affectionate nephew, Patrick J. SHEEHY..

G'F TIMOTHY son of William Foley and Margaret POWER DOB 1856 migrated to Australia after 2 brothers - dates of births -

WILLIAM  1843; JAMES 1849 ; and sister  CATHERINE 1854.  All born Watergrasshill  Cty CORK.

Another sister MARY  DOB c1841 wrote a letter to my  g'f Timothy from 1 Mary Street,Cork in OCT. 1918. She mentions neither husband nor children. She speaks of Australian soldiers in Cork & asks of my mother who would have been 16 in 1918. This confirms correspondence  between Ireland & Australia but little else.

Was she widowed ? Did she have 1 son - Patrick J. who was unmarried ???  If so there'll be no descendants. She could have married as early as  c1860 when Timothy was still very young ( 1856 dob).

OR was there another FOLEY sister maybe between 1844 - 1848  or  1850 - 1853 ; Was she named Margaret  after her mother??

William FOLEY senior died in Ireland 23/05/ 1881.

Margaret POWER - FOLEY died May 1893

I have tried to access census records and  even church records but no success. One census indicated I was on WRONG track. Thankyou for reading.

Watergrasshill RC baptismal records start in 1836. I searched for children of William Foley and Margaret Power and found the following baptismal records as transcribed by the subscription site FindMyPast.ie

Margaret 1839 James 1843 Thomas 1845 Michael 1847 Catherine 1850 Timothy baptized September 12th 1852 Edward 1855   Two of the records were transcribed as Margaret Bower as mother but I'm sure Margaret Power would be correct.

The 1893 death record for Margaret Power Foley (first record at link) https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/files/civil/deaths_returns/deaths_1893/06006/4709200.pdf   shows Mary Sheehy as daughter of deceased.

Thankyou  Roger and Mary for  reponding so quickly to my query .

However while  solving the initial question of PATRICK J's parentage ( almost certainly Patrick Joseph) there are some detals at odds with accepted  info.

I haven't   been able to access  Margaret Power - FOLEY 's  Death Certificate but will retry.

James 's  Marriage  & Death  certs. in Australia  indicate DOB 1849 & DD 1881.

Michael  & Thomas  not " family names.

William was a brother of Timothy's DOB 1843.

There were cousins  Edward coukd be from that line.

.

But thankyou so much. RUTH

Ruth:

In the 19th century ages were not as exact as they are now in the 21st century. Many emigrants coming to America or other countries modified their age to fit the situation. Someone who was 15 may have told an employer they were 19 to get a job. James likely made himself younger at his wedding. Many ladies did the same thing. Since he used 1849, his family or widow used that year when he died. Also, you had Timothy born in 1856 but the baptismal record shows 1852.

Michael and Thomas may have died young in Ireland and their names were never used again.

Roger & Mary I can understand how difficult it must be to research C19th parish records.  I went cross - eyed trying to read the handwriting on crammed pages..

And I'm quite sure many altered their ages to suit  circumstances.

ALSO  so many names repeated across related famiilies.

To return to the Watergrasshill records I  still believe

my Foley dates essentially correct. Timothy was father to 11 chn. I have only Birth Certs for 3  + his Marriage Cert. but they are consistent with 1856.

His father, William ( Margaret Power)  had a bother Timothy( Mary Barry)  whose son, William & family maintained close links to cousins in Australia.

 Tim's oldest  brother , WILLIAM DOB 1843.

You found a Margaret 1839. She could well be a sister who remained in Ireland.

Mary 's MARRIAGE to Joseph SHEEHY ;  BIRTH of PATRICK J. SHEEHY ;  her mother, MARGARET POWER - FOLEY residing with her at time of death.

NB.  JOSEPH  SHEEHY ( Mary's spouse died  at same address 3 days later . All SEEM to fit BUT  MARY should be about 49 yo for 1901 census.

Thankyou again for your time & effort. Ruth

To add to the information Roger provided. Record from Ancestry (below). In Ireland in the 1800s, they typically did not celebrate birthdays. So, unless they checked the records at the local parish, people did not know when they were born. I have found records off by 10 years. The actual Civil Birth Records (started in 1864) and Parish Baptismal Records are the only records that provide official proof of age.

Watergrasshill, Cork and Ross - Catholic Parish Registers at the NLI

I saw on some Ancestry trees (there are 50 trees for this family) that William's birth ranged from 1843-48. You might want to search the parish records. The link provided above.

A tree on Ancestry shows this as Timothy's (brother of William) baptism record. Maybe??

Ruth,

Note the age on the civil death records is not always accurate.

Mary

Thankyou Mary. Your parish excerpt is much clearer ( lighter) than the record I tried to read.
