Flynn/Flinn of Waterford, Ireland

I am new to IrelandXO and I am stumped when it comes to my Flynn/Flinn's of Waterford, Ireland.  I have been able to get back to my 3 x's Gr. Grandparents.  My 3 x's Gr. Grandfather was William b 1784, Waterford and d 1 Nov 1854 in St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada.  His wife's name was Margaret but unfortunately I do not have any other information for Margaret.  I only have two children of theirs.  My 2 x's Gr. Grandfather Andrew b 7 Oct 1816 and d 17 July 1890 in St. John's, Newfoundland.  I don't know if Andrew was born in Ireland or Newfoundland.  Andrew married Susannah Neagle 21 Nov 1849 in St. John's.  Susannah was b 7 Oct 1819, St. John's and d 25 Apr 1887 in St. John's.  The only other child I have for William and Margaret is Anastasia, b 1835 and d 5 Jun 1854 in St. John's.  I am missing many of their children between Andrew and Anastasia.  Any assistance at all with my Flynn/Flinn family would be greatly appreciated..

Thank You so much.

Thank You very much Patricia!  At least this will give me something that I can research.  I did not have any names to go by so Thank You so much again.  I really appreciate it very much. :)

I found this record on Ancestry. Per a tree on Ancestry, Thomas had a twin Anastasia. Probably no connection since your Anastatia was born in 1835.

Thank You MaryTV!  The prominent names in my Flynn/Flinn family is my Gr. Grandfather Thomas b 1860 in St. John's and he had a twin Walter.  I have never found any additional information on Watler.  My Thomas died in Jan 1893 in St. John's.  It very well could be that my Thomas was named after the Thomas you found b 1817.  My Thomas had a sister names Anastasia b 1852, St. John's, Newfoundland.  I realize these names are very common Irish names...but just maybe.  I had a subscription to Ancestry for many years.  I think it is time that I subscribe to it again.  Thank You very much, MaryTV!  Between you and Patricia, I now at least have some names that I can research. :)

Thank You, Patricia!  The fact that there was a John b 1788 and another b 1791 that means that the first John died...yes?  That's what I have heard in the past.  I realize John is also a very common name...and I have that name with my Flynn's.  The siblings to my Gr. Grandfather were William; Francis; Anastatia; Mary Ann; Andrew Thomas Daniel Flinn; Margaret; Walter Joseph (twin to my Thomas) and James Andrew.  They all have the surnames of "Flinn, Flynne and Fling".  My Thomas had a son John Michael.  But again...all these names I would imagine are very common Irish names.  I wish I had jus ONE that it was so off the charts, that as soon as I saw the name, I would know that person is part of my Flynn family.

Yes, the first John died and a subsequent child got the same name.

Thanks so much, Patricia.

Sorry, but I have another question.  My 5 x's paternal Gr. Grandfather's name was Daniel Carrol(l), b 1720 Whitfield, Lisnakill, Waterford.  His son...my 4 x's Gr. Grandfather John Carrol b 1743 Whitfield, Lisnakill, Waterford and d 3 Jan 1848 in St. John's, Newfoundland.  He was married to Elizaabeth Colbert, b 1766 Waterford and d 7 Jan 1848, St. John's, Nfld.  I found John's Will on the Newfoundland site, ngb.chebucto.org (a wonderful Canadian site of people who lived there and/or immigrated from Ireland) and it says that he was born in Whitfield, Waterford.  My brother visited his daughter who was working in Ireland.  I asked him to find out about Whitfield.  He was told by the tour guide that Whitfield was a town/city within a city...that Whitfield had it's own post office, it's own goverment buildings and that people of means lived in Whitfield.  Well, that must be true because John Carrol had 6 houses leaving them to his children naming them by name.  Is there still a Whitfield, Waterford??

Rae Martin

Thank You very, very much, MaryTV...these maps give me a much better perspective of where Whitfield is located.  I looked on the Griffiths Valuation and there is a John Carroll and a Daniel Carroll.  Again, these names would be very common names, not only to Ireland but also Canada.  What I find so interesting is that my 5 x's Gr. Grandfather Daniel and his son, my 4 x's Gr. Grandfather John, were born in Whitfield, Lisnakill however I looked to see the dates for the Griffiths and it is 1847-1864 so obviously not my John and Daniel.  My 4 x's Gr. Grandfather John had a son Daniel b between 1791 and 1804 and another son John b 12 Jan 1809.  John was born in St. John's, Nfld. Both John and Daniel are mentioned in their father John's Will dated 1846 and probate year was 1848.  I began this thinking that Daniel could be my 3rd Gr. Grand Uncle but I think argued myself out of that observagtion but not to worry, this is still sooooo exciting to me!  Thank You soooooo much for the information MaryTV and also Patricia.  I have added, just for interest sake, information where my 4 x's Gr. Grandparents John and his wife Elizabeth Colbert are buried in Belvedere Cemetery, St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada.  Both died within days of each other in 1848.

Rae Martin

Hello MaryTV...Mary, you very kindly gave me the above information about Thomas and Anastasia Flynn being born to Gulielmi Flynn and Margartae Moran.  Thomas' Baptism date was 12 May 1817.  You mentioned that you found this information on per a tree on Ancestry.  The information was found in the "Ireland, Catholic Parish Registers, 1655 - 1915".  Would you please be able to give me the information as to whom I could contact with regards to the information being in someones tree?

Thank You so much, MaryTV.
