Family of Harry M. Keevil

The death certificate of my great-grandfather, Harry M. Keevil, lists his birth in 1843 in the U.S. (Ohio), and his parents as Patrick Keevil and Sarah Brogan, both born in Ireland. I have tried very hard to find information about the two of them and am coming here for help. I believe Patrick's last name was spelled Keville or Kevil or Kivil in Ireland. I think he may be the son of Michael Kevil and Mary Coleman and was baptized March 26, 1822, in the parish of Boyle, County Roscommon. I can find nothing on Sarah Brogan. Can anyone help me certify Patrick's family and find Sarah? Thank you! My husband I are visiting Ireland in September, and I would like to pay homage to these members of my family.

Kate,

The RC parish of Boyle has very early baptism and marriage records...both from 1792. On the paid site, Roots Ireland, I do see the baptism record you mention above, but there are two others, both Patrick Kevil, one in 1826 and the other in 1828. I did not find Patrick and Sarah's marriage record. Did they marry in the US? If so, she could be from anywhere in Ireland, not necessarily Roscommon.

Regards,

Carolyn

Thank you, Carolyn! For a couple of reasons (one of them being that my great-grandfather was born in 1843), I believe that "my" Patrick Kevil was born in 1822. I am not 100% certain of that and appreciate your information. I agree about the marriage. They could have married in another location in Ireland. Also, I haven't confirmed when Patrick came to the U.S., but if I've got it right, he'd have been in his early 20s when he arrived, so it's very possible he married here.

I also found this record  18th February 1820 for Anna daughter of Michael and Maria (Mary Coleman) https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000633913?locale=en#page/81/mode/1up

Birth of Bridget 12th October 1818  the names are Michael and Mary Coleman and Kivil  (I believe this is another sibling, entry incorrectly written) https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000633913?locale=en#page/70/mode/1up

Thank you, Anna. I didn't know Patrick had a sister!

And another sister!

Katie and Eileen,

The baptism record for Bridget, 1818, is a cousin to Patrick, not a sibling. Roots Ireland has the marriage in the RC parish of Boyle for Michael Coleman & Mary Keville, 4 Feb 1811. So, I think that Coleman siblings married Keville siblings.

Michael Kivil & Mary Coleman had the following children:

Dominic 1818, Anne 1820, Patrick 1822, Michael 1824, Margaret 1825 and Bridget 1830.

The sponsor names for all the above children show a number of Coleman and Kivil names as well.

Regards,

Carolyn

Thanks to both of you. I wish I could find info on Patrick coming to the U.S., specifically Ohio where Harry was born, but have not been successful. Neither have I been able to locate any records relating to Harry's birth. His death certificate says he was born in Lawrence County, Ohio, and I did find an 1850 census record there listing a family that may be related to him. John Kivel (born 1816), Anna Gray (1820), and three children: Mary, Anna and Michael. They all came from Boyle. If I could substantiate a relationship between John and Patrick, I'd be pretty sure that Boyle is indeed where that side of my family originated.

We have finished our itinerary for the trip (one month!) and will be staying in Boyle for one night!

Katie,

John and Patrick could be cousins OR not related at all. In Ireland, the surname is most common in the RC Boyle parish, so it might just be a coincidence they were both in Ohio. John’s baptism record from Oct 1816 shows that his father was Bartholomew and mother Napolonia Malarky!. Not a name you see everyday! The surname in the record on Roots was mistranslated as Cevil.

At look at Griffith’s Valuation records show 13 Kivil names in Boyle….your Patrick probably emigrated before then. My best guess is that he married in the US. It’s odd that there are no US census records for him before 1880. One possibility is that his name was written incorrectly which makes him difficult to locate.

Regards,

Carolyn
