Family of Keighron - Ballyconnell from 1800's to ??

Ive always known my mum Evelyn was born in Ballyconnell, Sligo but unfortunately never asked her about her life or that of my ancestors. She died in 1988 and now at the ripe age of 63 Im desperate to feel close to her. I visted Ballyconnell a couple of weeks ago with little information, but previous research confirmed the Keighron family were shown on Griffiths valutaion in the middle 1800's and then on the 1901 and 1911 census as being farmer/fishermen. I cannot find via Ancestry.co.uk much information about my grandparents or my great grandparents especailly any information on where they may be buried. I know my mum was the youngest of 8 children all sadly passed on now and my cousins agree that we dont have much information to pool. Below is what I do know:-

Patricius Keighron - great grandfather born 1833 died ?? was on 1911 census though?

Catherine Keighron (nee Costello)- great grandmother born 1837, died ?? was on 1911 census though?

Bernard (Bryan ) Keighron - grandfather born 1875 died 1945?

Mary Keighron (nee Meehan) - grandmother born 1879 died 1949?

Then there were the 8 children (my uncles and auties) Mary, Patrick, Anna (these three emmigrated to New Jersey), Maggie who lived in Strokestown (died 1988 but cant find her grave either or her husband Michaels?), Winifred, Frances Teresa. I did find my uncle Johns grave in Cerrigans Cemetry and have since been in contact with his children, my cousins, but they cant advise, and then lastly my mum Evelyn who was born in 1920. Mum came over to England where she lived and died.

If anyone can provide any infomation/history/photos on the family I would dearly love to have it. Or any information on where their graves may be (futile searches made on numeous websites).

Thank you for reading

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I searched on the subscription site Roots Ireland and was not able to find a church marriage record for Patrick and Catherine. They married pre-1864 so no civil record would exist. The subscription site Roots Ireland has baptismal records for six children: Michael 1863 John 1865 Patrick 1867 Maria 1870 Thomas 1872 Bernard 1875 (Bernard would be an alternative name for Bryan). All baptisms were in the Drumcliffe RC parish.

The free site www.irishgenealogy.ie has images of death records from 1878-1966. Birth records are only available from 1864-1916 and I assume your mother was born after 1916. I did find Death records for Patrick, Catherine, Bryan (Bernard) and Mary. See below

Anita:

You may want to e-mail the parish and ask about cemeteries in the area.   https://www.elphindiocese.ie/parishes-ministries/parish-details/?parishID=24

The Griffiths Valuation for Co. Sligo was conducted 1857-1858. As you noticed, there is a John in Ballyconnell and a Patrick in Cregg. John may be the father of Patrick and it is possible the Patrick record could be for the Patrick born 1833 or possibly another relative.

Marriages usually ocurred in the bride's parish. Drumcliff has records back to 1841 so I'm wondering if they married in St. John's where records start in 1858.

Hi Roger, I cant thank you enough, Ive just looked at the death record links which are very interesting and informative, I would never have found them. Strange how two died of cancer of the face?

I will look into contacting the Parish as suggested. I did email the Vaulation Office as to wheter they could supply info and have had a very postive response so that looks very promising. Once I have a little bit more info I'm coming back for another visit to Ballyconnell.   I feel quite connected to the place now.

Thank you so very much once again.

Anita,

My G. Grandfather was also called Bryan (Bernard) Keighron (b.1872) from Ballyconnell / Carney in Co. Sligo. He also died in 1945, in Pollock, Lanarkshire.

His Father (my GG Grandfather) however was Micheal Keighron who married Catherine (Kate) Heraghty (b.1845).

I've been trying to compile a list of Keighron's from Co. Sligo for a few years now and it appears the forenames Micheal, Patrick, Joseph and John were very popular and helps to add to the confusion.

I have a small newspaper article from the Sligo Champion dated 27/1/1917 in which a vote of sympathy from the Knocknarae branch of the United Irish League was extended to "Mrs Pat Keighron and family, Ballyconnell on the death of her husband". This matches the entry for Patrick Keighron in the Register of Deaths for Carney around that date.

A Bryan Keighron (Farmer) also inherited £135 5s. from Thomas Keighron (Gentleman) formally of Beanfield, who died at Breeogue 13/4/1903. It's possible that this could be your grandfather who would've been 28 at the time.

I'd be interested to hear if you know of a family connection between Thomas Keighron of Beanfield and your G Grandfather Bryan as Beanfield is linked to another Patrick Keighron (b. 1814) who was a fairly prominent character in Sligo in the 19th Century.

I suspect that my GG Grandfather (Micheal) and your GG Grandfather (Patrick) were brothers but my information differs from yours slightly.

Best of luck with your research.

Regards,

Norm Keighron.

Hi Relatives, My grandmother was Rose Ann Keighron daughter of Bryan Keighron and Catherine (Gerahty) not sure of the spelling.   The Keighrons went to America in the 1800s RoseAnn was one. My mother tells the story. Some did not like it and took a boat back but landed in Glasgow and stayed there. My mother was born in Glasgow. Many of the Keighrons that stayed in America are in a state named New Jersey.

My mother speaks of her cousin Bernard (Bryan) Keighron. My mother father was John Kelly and they moved to London England after the WWII and my mother was a teenager. Rose Ann (Keighron ) Kelly died in 1937 just before the WWII and the family was dispersed to uncles and Aunts. There are many Keighrons in Glasgow Scotland and in New Jersey USA.

I hope this helps. I will be researching more on my ancestors as well.

PS my mother is still with us and will turn 90 years of age in 2022

Hi Linda,

Your Grandmother Rose-Ann was sister to my Grandfather John Keighron.

I never knew my Grandfather as he was killed when the ship he was drafted to, HMS Exmouth, was torpedoed in January 1940. My parents were born in Glasgow too.

Your account of some returning from the US helps and would explain why there are gaps in the information I have. I have seen a Bernard Keighron listed as a ship passenger from the US to Glasgow but have no other information other than the name.

Would your Mum know if they all went to New Jersey or did any go to a different area? Would she remember her Uncle John? I’d be interested to hear anything your Mum can remember and I’d be happy to share the information I have.

Thanks for replying.

Hi Norm, I spoke with my mother and at her age she only remembers her cousins Rose and May McQuig from Glassgow. Their mother was Rose Ann Keighron's sister Mary. One of the cousins married someone named Charlie Brown and moved to Canada. Also some time ago I was emailing with a John Keighron ( through Ancestry.com)  I beleive he was living in England at the time and did send him whatever pictures I had. The pictures on my family tree in Ancestry)  He was also looking for information on the Keighrons. I suspect he is the son of my mother's cousin Bernard(Bryan) eho also moved to England around the same time as my mothers family.

I hope this helps.

Hi Norm, my mother does not remember her Uncle John as she was child at the time he died. The family was scattered due to war. There were some that sang and wrote songs for s singer named John McCormick during that time. We may be able to find out who John McCormick the singer was and who wrote his songs. should be some familiar names.

Please look at my ancestry tree you may see some names that are familiar.

Hi Linda,

Thanks for both replies. John is my brother and I have seen the photos. They're amazing and there's definately a family resemblance.

My Dad is also named John, and he has talked about McQuigs in Canada. He is Bryans (Bernards) Grandson. As far as I know Bryan didn't move to England but my parents did in the early '60's. I'm fairly certain Bryan was in Glasgow in 1939 as there is a report of him being knocked over by a car. He died in Pollock, Lanarkshire in 1945.

I recently moved to Ireland from England and live not too far from Ballyconnell now.

It's a beautiful part of the world but life in the latter part of the 19th Century would've been tough. There are reports of farmers having their livelyhood destroyed by storms and fishermen facing hardship by being unable to fish due to prolonged bad weather. There were also outbreaks of Typhus which affected the area more than most due to the remote location and lack of a local dispensary. It's understandable why so many left at that time.

I will take a look at your ancestry tree and please pass on my thanks and best wishes to your Mum.

Thanks again for taking the time to respond and I'm sure we'll be in contact again soon.

Regards,

Norm Keighron

Linda, I think I may have emailed a member of your family on Ancestry. Norm I may have also messaged you on another noticeboard.
My Bernard (Bryan) Keighron (1872 to1945) was also my great grandfather My grandfather was Thomas Keighron a brother of Rose-ann, John and Mary. There was also another brother Michael who waxwonded during the war and died from injuries He was mentioned in the Glagow Herald at the time Linda, the Bernard (Bryan) you speak of was my uncle, my mum Margaret's brother. He did move to London. My mum moved to Belfast after her dad died in 1938. Thomas had 3 children. I remember the McCuaigs well as we would have spent holidays with my Granny Aunt Mary as I called her, pand family in Glasgow. Also some of the Kelly's John and Tommy. Four of Mary's children went to Canada and yes one married Charlie Brown. Great connecting with you both. Regards Marie

Mariematthews1…

Hi Marie,

I've been trying to find out more about Michael, (brother of your grand-father Thomas and my grand-father John). I'm fairly sure, (though not certain), that he's the same Michael who served with the Scottish rifles in WW1 and suffered a gunshot wound to the ankle in France, March 1915. It seems he was discharged in 1917 and in receipt of a pension allowance for treatment until his death in 1924 at the age of around 31, The date of birth in the 1901 Census is slightly out from the date of birth on his service records but it shows his address as Alma Street in Glasgow. I haven't been able to find any record of his death but I hope to be adding more information to Ancestry soon. There was also a Michael Keighron who served in France at the same time with the Army Ordnance Corps and a Michael Keighron born in Ballyconnell in December 1892, Son of Michael Keighron (b.1862) (Farmer), and Mary McDermott.

Best wishes,

Norm.
