Family of John Sweeney of County Cork

My query concerns my great grandparents.  John Sweeney was born in 1848 in Glenogue (Glannoge?), Kilshanning, County Cork.  He was still alive for the 1911 census living in "House 5 in Glannoge Dromore, Cork".  My grandfather, Bat Sweeney, born in May, 1890 and his siblings are listed.

Two questions already.  Can you find out when John died?  I had a 1905 date but that is obviously incorrect.  Also, I have the ship manifest record for Bat saying that he immigrated  to New York in September, 1910.  Then how is he listed on the 1911 census?  I have absolutely no doubt that it really is Grandpa listed on the census and the ship manifest.

Bat's mother, my great grandmother, was Ellen Riordan, born in 1855 and died on June 26, 1905 in Kilshanning, Glenogue.  Bat provided the information for the death certificate.

I am not certain of the following information.  I have Ellen Riordan baptised on April 20, 1855 in Cork.  Father listed as Eugene Riordan and mother as Elizabeth Brown(e).  Well, an Ellen Riordan was baptised on that day.  I am not sure it was my great grandmother because...

I have Ellen Riordan marrying John Sweeney in Kilshanning on September 21, 1884 in the Roman Catholic Chapel of Bweeng.  On the marriage certificate, Ellen's father is listed as "Bat", not Eugene.

On the 1901 census, at the same house that the family was in 10 yeras later, Ellen is listed as "Eliza", not Ellen.

So I need your expertise.  I may have mixed in people with no relation to me except a similar name.  Maybe dates were entered incorrectly, or sloppily, but I want to set the record straight.

Thank you, yet again  -Kathleen Logue

John died January 1 1917  https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_retu…

I can't explain Bat coming to America in September 1910 and also living in Ireland on March 31 1911 uncless, he came home for some reason after spending a couple months in America and then emigrated a second time. Did youn see the ship's manifest record or is it a transcription and possibly an error was made in the transcription.

If you used Roots Ireland to locate the baptismal record for Ellen Riordan, you won't find the record because from what I can see the Kilshannig records are not on Roots Ireland and the parish register is not on the NLI site.

Can't explain the Eliza in the 1901 census unless she was baptized Ellen Elizabeth and used Eliza.

Dear Roger and other volunteers,

As mentioned in the previous post, my great grandfather was John Sweeney (1848-1917).  Can you tell me the names of his siblings?  I am hoping that I can then reference those names with Katherine "Kate" McSweeny, and find a common relative.

I obtained a copy of Katherine's will but it did not provide any new information concerning lineage.  The executor of Katherine's will was my grandfather, Bartholomew McSweeney, John's son.  Bartholomew is listed as "cousin".  At one point, Bartholomew"s wife, Madge (Margaret) Crean McSweeney, my grandmother, is also mentioned and again the relation is "cousin".  This all occurs in Brooklyn New York.  No wonder I keep hitting brick walls!  Still I try.

Once more, thank you for all your assistance.  Seasons Greetings!  -Kathleen Logue

Kathleen:

Finding John Sweeney's baptismal record (and his siblings) is a challenge. As I mentioned earlier, Roots Ireland does not have any Kilshannig records. There is a parish register for baptisms only from 1842-1850 on the NLI site  https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0111 ; My prior comments about no register on NLI was incorrect.

I went to the subscription site FindMyPast.ie  and found four John Sweeney/Sweeny baptismal records in the 1840s- one in 1843 and three in 1847. We know from the 1884 civil marriage record that the father of John was also John. One of the four records has a father named Morgan so I discounted that record. The other three either show John as the father or Jo ol so you would have to assume all three are in play.

The oldest record was John Sweeney baptized August 15 1843 father Jo and mother Mary Quin

The next record was John Sweeney baptized July 1 1847 father Jul mother Julia Regan

The last record was John Sweeney baptized March 28 1847  father Jno (which is clearly John) mother Mary Callahan

So do any of the three maiden names listed connect with anything that you are aware of in your Sweeney line?
