Ireland Reaching Out - www.irelandxo.com Hello,

I am researching the Whealan family. My great grandmother, Rosa Whealan, wrote in her family bible that she was born in "Queensborough, County Galway, Ireland". She was born March 5, 1841. We know her father's name was Patrick (born about 1810). We have a photo of him. We don't know her mother's name. We have deduced thatRosa was born on the estate of Queensborough (Quansboro...now Stowlin) Civil Parish of Kilquain, Roman Catholic Parish of Fahy. Rosa Whealan emigrated to America. We don't know the exact year but have proof via US Census that she was in California by 1860. I believe she was Catholic and know that the Parish of Fahy didn't start keeping records for Baptisms until after 1871.

I am still looking for:

  • any information about decendents of her family that may have stayed in Ireland. I don't know any names of these. We believe she had 4 sistersbased on individual photos of each thatwe have. We only know thename of one, Bedelia Ann Whealan (born in 1838), who also emigrated to America (California). Both sisters are buried in Mariposa, California.
  • Ship manifest or any records to show exactly when they came to America
  • Her mother's name.
  • Trying to determine which Patrick Whealan was her father. There are so many. I have found at least 4via death records who are buried in the general area. I am wondering if there is a list somewhere of those buried in The Quansboro cemetery.

If anyone has any tips for me I would appreciate it! I have looked at many online websites recommended but am always still looking.

I will also be visiting for a few days in person in June 2015. If anyone knows how best to use my time while in Ireland to try and find the above information I would appreciate any advice.

Sincerely,

Donna Reinke

Hi Donna

I have a cd Memorials of the Dead Galway & Mayo; there is no Quansboro in the list of cemeteries

There is 1 Whealon record on it - it is from Moycullen Old Cemetery Galway and reads:

"Erected by Andrew Whealon who died  August 1803 also his" '(broken and missing)'

There were no Whealan records

I couldn't find the birth/baptism records of Rosa or Bedelia on www.rootsireland.ie/ (pay site) but there are many records for children of Patrick Whealan in Galway; there are 3 for 1841: Honora Mary & Peter

There is a record of the birth of Patrick WHELAN in Galway in 1808 parish is RAHOON RC but that's not near Fahy.

There are some Patrick Whelans / Whealons / Whealans in the Tithe Applotments 1823-37 (free online) but all are from counties other than Galway

Griffiths Valuation 1848-64 free online has 27 in Galway

The Irish phone book has 3 Whelans (1 Galway) and 1 Whealan so maybe you could drop them a line if all else fails - you never know your luck

Hi Donna,

I am from the parish of Fahy & Quansboro.  I will do some research for you over the next few days and see if I can come up with anything for you.   I will visit the cemetery in Quansboro to see if there is a grave there, I will search Fahy also if I have no luck in Quansboro.  There is one family of Whelan's in the area, whether they are related or not remains to be seen!

Hopefully I will find something out for you.

Best regards,

Hello Donna ... don't know if you'll see this after so many years since your original post but here goes anyway.

The 1824 Tithe Applotment Book includes five records of landhoholders with the Townland of "Quainsborough" within the Civil Parish of Kilquain, one of which is for a Pat Whealan. Now if you are certain that your Pat Whealan was born c.1810 then it's quite possible that this Pat Whealn recorded as a landholder of 23 acres in 1824 will be his father and your Rosa's grandfather.

My interest in this family is that my relative James Newell who emigated to Australia in 1841 was also noted as being from "Quonsborough". [NOTE:  The name 'Quansboro' has had many variations over the years. For instance between 1836 and 1845 the Catholic Directory variously references 'Queenboro', 'Queensborough', 'Quinsboro' and 'Quansboro'. It was also frequently recorded in many source documents as being "Quansbury".]  James' parents (both deceased by 1841) were James and Honora  and my current understanding is that her surname was Whealan.  If this is correct then it might be the case that she was a sister of your Pat Whelan b.1810.

Also from online search of the headstones in the Quainsboro Cemetry it would appear that there are no Newell or Whealan recorded.

regards

Peter

Did you find a transcription of Quansboro cemetery ? I am interested in a Shadwell family that was there in the 18th C.
