Dear Palm

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out and apologies for the delay in getting back to you.

The Civil Parish of Clonrush borders Co. Clare:

http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/fuses/townlands/index.cfm?fuseaction…

Records for the corresponding RC parish of Clonrush begin in 1846. If Edward was born there and married Ann in that parish, there will be no parish records prior to that year. There doesn't seem to be a baptism record for Ellen in either Clare or Galway. Can I ask how you came across the year of birth for Ellen?

Best wishes

Hello miss, aka Palmwood

I have a book on Lakyle School by Alfie O'Brien (2009), and it shows an Ellen Ryan on the 1850 student roster (age 9, address Clonrush).  It would figure that this Ellen Ryan was born in 1841.  My grandfather Owen Maguire attended the same school.  You might want to find more information about the Clonrush parish where they offer the book for sale (http://www.clonrush.eu/Contact.htm).  It has a link for contacting the author, Alfie O'Brien.

I wish you luck on tracing your ancestors.  It seems difficult to find records for earlier than 1846.  One hope would be finding a younger sibling for your Ellen Ryan.  A marriage certificate for Ellen Ryan might list her parent's names.  I've been amazed at the many resources offered by the Clare Library (http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclare/genealogy/genealog.htm).

Good luck,

A huge change is coming soon for everyone involved in Irish genealogy. By summer 2015, the National Library of Ireland will have a dedicated website making its collection of Catholic parish register microfilms freely available online. These records are – by a long way – the single most important source of historical Irish family information, one of the greatest legacies of the Catholic Church to Ireland.

Hi,

I used the public library edition of Ancestry, and I promise you'll find a civil death record for Edward Ryan if you look for it for the registration district of Scarriff in Ireland.  I also saw a record of interest for Ellen Ryan in the Scarriff registration district.

I'd appreciate if you could share a tidbit from your perspective, such as emigration from Ireland or anything like that.  It's exiting to imagine what you know of Ellen Ryan as your great grandmother.  Best wishes to you in your searches.  I hope you find some of what you seek.

Thanks to Salmo for that tantalizing news about the future offerings from the national library of Ireland.  I know I'm looking forward to Summer of 2015.
