Ellen Conboy - Peter Flynn civil marriage record help

Hello,

I have searched the irishgenealogy.ie records for a while trying to find the above named couple's civil marriage record from the Mohill registration district, as well as nearby districts. Their Catholic parish record of their marriage on 20 Feb 1868 was in the RC parish of Bornacoola, Leitrim. Peter Flynn was from Cloontumpher, Leitrim, and I believe Ellen Conboy to be from Ahanagh, Longford....Bornacoola parish was the nearest to them both. I am in search of her father's first name.

Are there any other sources to look for this record?

Thank you,

Carolyn

Carolyn:

The 1857 Griffiths Valuation lists a Michael Flynn and a Peter Flynn in the townland of Cloontumpher. Likely one or the other was the father of Peter. It appears there is no civil marriage record.

Mary & Roger,

Thank you for your reply. Yes, I am aware of their 8 children as well as the naming tradition. I am only interested in the Conboy line at the moment. The only Thomas Conboy in the land records is in Rooskynamona, Leitrim where many other Conboys are as well. The 1901 & 1911 census records show that Ellen was born in Longford. Also, Roots Ireland has baptism records for the RC parish of Bornacoola back to 1824, but without the correct father's name, I cannot conclude anything for certain.

Are there any other resources either online or in person that their 1868 civil marriage record might be found? Was it common for couples not to register or perhaps is was lost?

Thanks,

Carolyn

Carolyn:

I'm fairly confident that the marriage was not civilly registered. In the early years of civil registration, not all marriages were registered. It is not clear whether the marriage would have been registered in Leitrim or Longford. I looked at irishgenealogy.ie and there were 110 civil marriages in 1868 in the Superintendent Registrar's District of Mohill and 172 civil marriages in the Superintendent Registrar's District of Longford. I screened the Mohill marriages and the record was not there (sometimes one or both surnames could be misspelled). You can review the Longford records.

Do you know names of any of Ellen's siblings. Could you go to Roots Ireland and look at all the Conboy civil marriages starting in 1864 and see if a sibling married and find the name of the father?

Hi Roger,

My goal in this search is to see if Ellen Conboy is a sister to my great great grandmother, Mary Conboy. There are stories told to me from the descendants of Ellen here in the US that the Flynns and Coxes (my relations) were cousins. I have heard that they considered themselves "cousins", but I am uncertain if they just used that term loosely because maybe they were just close friends. I emailed you some time back asking a question regarding where Mary Cox (Conboy) was from as she is on the 1901 census from Ballymagrine on your leitrim-roscommon genealogy page - you found that for me. You stated that unless otherwise noted, as some are, that she was probably from Roscommon. The town land of Ballymagrine borders the town land of Ahanagh, Longford where I believe the Conboys to be from. I wish the original Ballymagrine 1901 census was online! She died before the 1911 census.

While there are baptism records in the correct time frame for both Mary and Ellen in the RC parish of Bornacoola, the father's names are not the same. I have looked at the Longford civil marriage records to no avail.

Thanks,

Carolyn
