Elizabeth McKay

Meath

Hi Everyone, My name is Narelle from QLD Australia and I'm searching for any information on my 3rd great grandmother Elizabeth McKay. I know nothing of her life before she immigrated to Australia 24 Jun 1841 on the ship "Earl Grey" Elizabeth was under the protection of Mr Samuel & Mrs Charlotte Benson who were travelling with their adult children. Her immigration card has her birth at 1819 Agher, County Meath, Ireland and her parents names John and Elizabeth McKay. Her religion was recorded as Protestant. Any help would be much appreciated finding her parents and siblings. Thankyou

Rell,

I did not find a Birth record but note her father's name was William on her death certificate. What was on her immigration card was probably accurate since she would have provided.

Hi MaryTV, Thanks for your reply. I do have her death certificate but don't know if the informant guessed her father's name. I got her father's name John McKay from her immigration card. Her marriage certificate doesn't state her father's name, though it is just an extract. If I order a full certificate it'll cost $43 and I don't know if it'll have any extra information on it.

Hi Narelle,

My ancestors travelled on the same ship from the same area of Meath. They were Bensons, although not the same ones she was under the protection of. Have you done a DNA test and or do you have GEDMATCH yet? I am related to some McKays from the area. There seem to be DNA links between Benson and McKay in the area. One of Samuel Benson's descendants had information on the outrages in the area which led to some of the local protestant families migrating to Australia at the time. If you are related to those descendants it could also help you to understand more about her life before moving.

Also, there are land records for McKays who lived in the area at the time if you haven't checked those yet. There were also still McKay families in the Agher parish until at least fairly recently: https://meathhistoryhub.ie/aghersummerhill/ . There are different civil parish and Catholic parish areas and some changed over time, so it's worth looking up McKay in Summerhill, Agher, Rathmolyon, Rathcore and Laracor when researching.

Hi Grace, Thankyou very much for this link, there is so much information. I have done my DNA, though I don't really know what to do with it. I did think being under the protection of Samuel Benson, Benson might be her mother's side of the family, as I don't know her maiden name. Which McKay's are you related too?
