Eliza Delaney

All I know about my great grandmother, Eliza Delaney, is that she arrived in Sydney Australia on the ship " Beejapore" in January 1853.  Shipping records note she is a nursery maid aged 19 years from Carbury in Kildare - her parents appear to be Ann and William.   I would love to know if there are any descendants out there - maybe she had brothers and sisters.

Thank you,   Margaret

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I checked Roots Ireland and could not locate a baptismal record for an Eliza Delany/Delaney in Kildare with parents William and Ann. The closest record was a record in Naas whcih is below. However, Naas is a good distance from Carbury. Here is the link to the carbury RC parish register http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0696   Records go back to 1821. I would search the register to see if you can find some leads for your Delaneys.

Hi Margaret, are you still looking? Eliza is my great grandmother too. Her son James was my grandfather. I have her history in Australia if you're interested in that side. She married William Doggett in 1854 and they spent most of their life in Rydal, where they are buried. Please let me know if you'd like anything further. I'm still trying to track her life prior to Australia.

Hi Carmel,

Thanks for reaching out.

My Grandfather was Charles brother of your Grandfather James.

I have tried many times to find leads on Eliza Delaney with no luck - I surprised that over the generations no snippet of her life in Ireland has filtered down.

Like you I have history of her life in Australia but yearn to learn about her life in Ireland - she could have had brothers and sisters?

Sometimne time ago I did read on a site "Red Fox" a Esther Delaney looking for a Eliza Delaney whether it is our Eliza Delaney i dont know.

Hi Margaret. I'm pleased to hear back from you, I wasn't sure you'd still be on the site. I haven't gone onto too many sites yet so I think you're a long way ahead of me. Did you go to any of the reunions organised in 80s and 90s by Helen Butler? It looks like she's on your line. I found an interesting story on Eliza on her retirement from Railway, on Trove. Have you seen that? I gained lots of insights on our ancestors through Trove.

Hello Carmel,  Sorry for the delayed response.  No I didnt go to any family reunions in the 80's and 90's.  I am aware of the Trove site but didnt think of looking up for Eliza on it.

I tried  searching the Trove site  after receiving your message but had no luck - would you mind sending me the direct link to the article?  Do you just search by the Doggett name?

Like you I would love to know Eliza"s life before coming to Australia and also where she met William Doggett.

Hi Margaret, time gets away, especially this time of year. I can't post a link to Trove, I'm not that clever. What I do is Google Trove, then add Doggett, Rydal and select newspapers and heaps come up, mostly my line as they remained in Rydal. It's most enlightening as to what they were like. The particular article is called "Rydal, retirement of an old railway servant" . I know William and Eliza married at The Baptist Church in Ashfield in 1853 which is the year they both arrived in Sydney (maybe it was 91854). We were also told by my uncle that Eliza came to Australia as a Nanny for a Lord and Lady someone. But we have no verification of that although it
fits as she's shown as a nursemaid. Good luck with it. BTW I live in Wollongong in case you're ever close by.

Carmeldoggett@…

Hello Carmel, Time does get away - I am just getting the hang of logging in to reply to you!   I thought Eliza was married in the Anglican Church at Ashfield?  -  I will dig out what information I have and pass on to you.

As there is such a strong Catholic line in the Doggett family and Eliza  coming from Ireland I  thought they would have been married in the Catholic Church.

A few years back my son crossed paths with a Michael Doggett and I had lunch with him and my son - he worked  for the NSW Railways and if I remember correctly he comes from James line also.

I knew Eliza was a nursery maid aged 19 years when she came out and was the first lady gatekeeper presumably on  the railway but then it could have been on Parramatta Road when they first had tolls.

I dont think I would ever be in the Wollongong area now but you never no - I live close to Hornsby

Do we always have to communicate through"  Ireland Reaching Out" or is there some way of using our private email addresses?

Looking forward to staying in touch,

Margaret

Hi Margaret, my email is carmeldoggett@gmail.com. I'll be able to email my screenshots from Trove, although they're not great but tell the story. Eliza was definitely gatekeeper for railway. We are all a railway family, I even gave them 10 years. Michael would be my cousin's son but we didn't really know them. Eliza was Catholic and William church of England. William probably had to convert. I think maybe they married in the Baptist church for convenience or lack of other options. Please email me and we can get into this in much more depth. Carmel

Carmeldoggett@…

Hello Carmel, I have a lot going on at the moment but just wanted you to know I have opened your emails!

Yes I know Eliza was a gatekeeper at Rydal but before that, maybe before her marriage or when she first arrived in Australia she lived at Petersham - what did she do then?

Eliza came out of the ship "Beejapore"in 1853 and William on the "David McIvor" in 1854.

A lot of what I know is just hear say I suppose but I will rat through my "box" and see what else I have.

I think of Eliza each time one of my grandchildren get baptised in the Catholic Church - she bought the faith to Australia and it is still continuing to this day.

Thank you for your email address - I will respond tho this next time I connect once I get over this busy hump!

Margaret
