Edward Gilmore and Sarah Burke Gilmore, Ballygar, County Galway

I am searching for information about my 2x great grandparents. They would;ve been born in the early 1800s. As far as I know, they stayed in Ireland. Their son John, my paternal great grandfather, went to America in the 1850s. John was born about 1840 in Ireland. According to family relatives, John is someone related to Patrick Sarsfield Gilmore-might be a cousin.I have not been able to find out if John had siblings but, being Irish, have to believe he did. John came to live in Milford, Massachusetts. He married Ellen Cooney there in 1864 and they somehow ended up in Elmira, New York where they lived the rest of their lives.

Thank you.

Rick Gilmore

Hello again!

Roots Ireland does not have the baptismal records for Ballygar/Killian parish although they do have the marriages and some death records. I did try searching Find My Past but had no success. I then checked the parish register and found that there is a gap from July 1833 to October 1844 for baptismal records which would indicate that John's baptismal record is not available. Here is a link to the parish register http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0545 I don't see Edward Gilmore in the 1855 Griffiths so you may want to check out the death data on the parish register

Hi Rick,

My g-g-grandfather, Patrick Gilmore, was born around 1835 in Ballygar, to Peter and Margaret Gilmore (maiden name unknown). The handed-down story in my family has always been that he too was a cousin of Patrick Sarsfield. I have a few 'circumstantial' pieces of  evidence of a relationship, but nothing more.  I was wondering whether your John may have been a sibling of my Patrick. Like you, I believe there must have been siblings, but I have nothing to go on.  My Patrick found his way to Cumberland around the late 1840's. I've never been able to find any firm information regarding the pre-famine time, but I shall 'keep at it'.
