Dwyer Family of Ballyricane Tipperary

Hi I am looking for information regarding the family of Thomas Dwyer who married Bridget Cleary in Ballyricane Tipperary in 1822. Children of the marriage are Timothy, Matthew, Denis, Catherine, Thomas and James. Matthew and Catherine immigrated to Victoria Australia in 1850. Any information regarding this family would be greatly appreciated.

Tara:

The subscription site Roots Ireland has some baptismal records for children of Thomas Dwyer and Bridget Cleary: Mary 1823 Matthew 1825 Thomas 1838 The RC parish was Sologhead and Oola which is in Co. Limerick on the border with Tipperary so the parish services people in both counties. There is a gap in records for the parish from 1828-1838 The townland is Ballyrickane in Donohill civil parish in Co. Tipperary.

I can confirm that James (sibling to Catherine and Matthew) also immigrated to Australia. James arrived in 1875 with his young family Mary (nee Hacket, married in Knockavilla, Tipperary in 1863, with a record reference to living in Solohead at the time of marriage) and their 4 children - Thomas (born in 1864, with a birth record listing Kilshinane as place of birth and residence of family), Edmond (born in 1865 in Kilshinane), Bridget (born in 1866) and Honora (born in 1872, also recorded as Hannah and as Nora). All 6 arrived at Rockhampton, Queensland, Australia on 1st August 1875 on the Lady Douglas Ship.

James died in 1880 in Rockhampton, Queensland.

Bridget died in 1892 in Rockhampton, Queensland.

Edmond died in 1911 in Rockhampton, Queensland.

Honora (listed as Nora on death record) died in 1914 in Rockhampton, Queensland.

Mary died in 1918 in Rockhampton, Queensland.

Thomas died in 1933 in Capella, Queensland (buried in Clermont, Queensland).

Of the 4 children by James and Mary, Thomas (1864-1933) was the only one to be recorded as married and have children of his own. Death records for the other 3 children of James and Mary list them as single with no known children.

Thomas Dwyer 1864-1933 (eldest son to James Dwyer and Mary Hackett, grandson to Thomas Dwyer and Bridget Cleary) married Bridget Cecilia Walsh (1882-1967) in 1901 in Capella, Queensland and they went on to have 13 children (all living through to late adulthood.

James Dwyer - Find A Grave Memorial ID 160408681

At the time of posting this, his Find A Grave incorrectly lists his name as Thomas James Dwyer. James' Tipperary Birth record only lists his name as James, not Thomas James, his marriage and death records list him as James.

The information above has been provided by one of direct descendants of James (1838-1880) and Thomas (1864-1933), and confirmed with DNA matches to the descendants of James's brother, Matthew Dwyer (1825-1867) who immigrated to Victoria with Catherine Dwyer (1831-?). It also appears that their brother Timothy Dwyer (1822-?) immigrated on the same ship with Catherine and Matthew.

Trove Obituary death notice dated 10 October 1933, Morning Bulletin, Rockhampton (newspaper) for Thomas Dwyer, son of James Dwyer (1838-1880), grandson of Thomas Dwyer and Bridget Cleary.

Many thanks GaelicAussie for your reply - how interesting. I’m wondering if you knew of Matthew and James’ sister Catherine Dwyer. We have evidence of her during her time from arrival in Australia in 1850 until the untimely death of her brother Matthew in Lauriston Victoria in 1867. She had been a witness to birth, marriage and her brothers death certificate, as well as on his will. Then she simply disappeared. WE would love to know where she went to and what happened to her. Any help is greatly appreciated. Many thanks again. Talk soon Tara Judy

Hi Tara Judy

Yes, what happened to Catherine after Matthew died has been an allusive brickwall for me as well. I can see her existenceup to Matthew's death and then nothing. I have started to search other state BDM records hoping to find her. I wondered if she ended up relocating to NSW with other Dwyers, or even up to Queensland with our branch. Or possibly was married at the time of Matthew's death and her last name may have been incorrectly listed under her maiden name because she was his sister. Have seen name errors on some records elsewhere so it could be a possibility, even a very low one...

I've often seen your Ancestry.com profile pop up in my research search finds. If you want to chat further via Ancestry messages amd collaborate with our trees/ research to find out what happened to Catherine, and to the other children of Thomas Dwyer and Bridget Cleary, feel freel to do so. My Ancestry profile is the same as this one - GaelicAussie
