Kevin,
Thank you so much for all this information. It's very kind of you to spend so much time replying to my post and is very much appreciated.
Thank you for pointing out my spelling error. My grandfather would be quite annoyed with me for that mistake. His name was also John Duffy. He was the person responsible for my research into the Duffy line. He had a marvelous memory and told me a lot about his family. I did come from Scotland to visit the area twenty years ago with my mother Veronica Duffy. We visited all the places john told us about.Rhode, Edenderry, Croghan, Clara and many other places in the surounding area. Unfortunately at that time I had little information and didn't make the most of the trip.
I'm quite new to researching the Irish records and have discovered that they are limited. It's difficult to find information. I have to go on the old notes I took from the stories of my grandfather.
John duffy and Maria Carlile left Ireland sometime between the birth of their son Michael in 1855 in Rhode and the marraige of another son Thomas in 1866 in Dundee.
I think John's parents left with them.
My grandfather visited Tubberdaly Nr. Rhode in the 1920's to visit another branch of the family (the Foy's related to his grandmother Mary Martin). He told me he used to visit the Carliles in Croghan. He told me that his grandfather ( the first mentioned John Duffy and HIS father) were born in Croghan.
I have looked at the available Catholic registers for Rhode and Edendery. I found a marraige for John and Maria in Edenderry and for some (but not all) of their children in Rhode. I do intend trolling through the other available records for clues.
That's it so far. I think John and Maria were very young when they married but were born before the available records. I did find other mention of Duffy's and Calile's but have no way of relating them soundly to my ancestors.
I haven't looked yet at the GriffithsValuation records.
I recently had My DNA results from ANCESTRY and they indicate my genes originate in the North of Ireland. 47% Scottish and 44% Irish. I've spent many, many years researching the Scotish bloodlines but only just started to concentrate on the Irish. I'm beginning to realise that the Irish search won't give up as many positive resuts.I think I need some lessons on Irish geneology research. I wish to find as much information as I can and then revisit the area.
How has your research been? Where are you based? Did any of your family come to Scotland?
I was born and bred in Dundee but now live in a wee Village called Friockheim (freecom) which is near Arbroath on the east coast of Scotland. When "lockdown" started I collected all my notes and bits of paper together in a huge pile in the middle of my bedroom floor. I spent weeks seperating them out into seperate families and then began the task of creating timelines and properly citing all the information I have. This task continues to be a work in progress. I thank god I have this project otherwise I would surely have lost my mind with boredom during this challenging time.
I think I'll attempt writing a book for my family and future generations. All my notes will be deposited into relevant archive centres.
Anyway Kevin, Thank you again for getting back to me. I hope you and yours are safe and well.
