Drumafivey House - near Stranocum, Antrim

Does anyone have any knowledge about this house? A lot of my ancestors were born their, but they did not own it, but rather, were tneants nearby.

donmaccal,

There’s a 358 acre townland called Drumafivey, or sometimes Drumnafivey, in Loughguile parish. In Griffiths Valuation in 1861 there were about 17 farms plus some labourers cottages in it. In the 1901 census there were 19 houses with a total population of 92.

I can’t see any property named as Drumafivey House on Griffiths maps nor can I find any reference to such a place in the newspapers. Perhaps the name of the townland has been mistaken as being the name of a single house? The only named house there that I can see is Brookville which in 1861 was the home of the Rev. William Toland.

Perhaps worth explaining that until quite recently, in rural areas, your townland alone was sufficient to identify you and get a letter delivered. There were no road names or house numbers. So everyone in Drumafivey had the same address, on a birth certificate or on a letter. Most average houses didn’t have names. (In this case just 1 large property in the townland appears to have had a name. That was it).

Hi Don McMillan here in Virginia, and I'm coming back to Northern Ireland in late August-early September, 2023!!

After we met and had that wonderful tour of Antrim (thank you yet again), I confirmed that David McMullan's wife's (Elizabeth) maiden name was "Frew". I met with a (DNA) 3rd  cousin in Cullybackey who provided me with death and marriage records of some of  her children in Port Glasgow, Scotland that contained her maiden name.

I also walked (in the rain) the Reformed Presbyterian Church's graveyard, but did not find the Gailey gravestone that I had a transcription of.

I'm going back to the McFadden store in Stranocum to see if I can (finally) meet Tim this time!

Let me know if you'd like to meet me there to have some more fish and chips!
