Downey/Coyle, Co. Tyrone

Looking for information on great-great grandparents, William Joseph Downey and Margaret (Ann?) Coyle, who may have been from Co. Tyrone. William was born sometime in the 1840's and was a shoe/boot maker. They may have been married in the mid 1860's, and might have had one daughter born in Ireland prior to moving and ending up in New York, where they had at least 4 other children, one of them being Julia Veronica Downey, our great grandmother. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You,

MM

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out

There is a marriage record on the NLI website if you would like to have a look HERE. It is quite faint but you can see the transcript on rootsireland.ie or familysearch.org possibly. It refers to the marriage of WilliamDowney and Margaret Coyle. Unfortunately neither set of parents are recorded. They married in the parish of Aghaloo, Co. Tyrone on 5th June 1864. Witnesses to the marriage were William Davidson and Catherine McKenna.

Their daughter Mary Anne (though I suspect the original image states Marian or Mariann) was baptised in Aughnacloy, Co. Tyrone on 27th April 1865. Godparents were recorded as Hugh and Elizabeth Coyle.

Hope this helps

Best wishes

The civil record of the 1864 marriage is available on-line on the GRONI site. (Filed under Wm Downey). It should give you a bit more information than the church records eg it should contain fathers names, townlands and occupations. Likewise you can view Mary Downey’s birth certificate, registered in Clogher. You can view the original certificates on-line on the GRONI website, using the “search registrations” option:

https://geni.nidirect.gov.uk

You will need to open an account and buy some credits. It costs £2.50 (sterling) to a view a certificate.

Thank you both so much!!  You are amazing.  Is there any way to get more information about Hugh and Elizabeth Coyle? Or John coyle? Or John Downey?  I would guess from the same general area in Tyrone, but am not sure.  I have been to Ireland twice, but at the time was not interested in specifics about family. It is odd to me that I only became interested after those who would know the answers hae passed on.  Again, thank you both and thanks to all of the staff and volunteers.  You will make my next trip truly special.

Transcribe the 1864 civil marriage cert and the birth cert  (or attach them to this board) so that we can see precisely where the families were living, their occupations etc.

Hello Marguerite McCann,
I believe I'm your relative. My mom was Margaret Rein Murphy and my dad was George Murphy. My mom's parents were Agnes Downey and John Rein. Her great grandparents were Agnes Coyle and William Downey. I remember as a young teen going to a McCann's house either in NY or CT with my parents for a family gathering, that was about 50 or more years ago!! If you read this can you please respond back as I'm going to Ireland and would love to find out any info on my ancestors.
Thanks so much,
Margaret Mary

Dear Margaret Mary, Getting your message was a wonderful way to wake up this morning!!  We are related, and I have been told how, but without seeing it written out, as you just did, I forget the correct sequence of who is who.  I live in Wa. State, my dad was Joseph John McCann, son of John Joseph McCann and Marguerite Veronica Hofmeister, who was the daughter of Julia Downey and Charles Hofmeister.  My dad had 4 siblings, and they all stayed on the East coast. If you remember a home in Ct., it was probably in Westport, but if it was in NY, there are a few more options.

I have a cousin in NY with the same name as mine, who visited with your family several years ago. I am going to forward our conversation and the Ireland XO information to her, in the hopes that the two of you can connect prior to your journey to Ireland.  Are you still in the NY/Ct area?

Are you still in the NY/Ct area?  Are you comfortable sharing either your phone number or your email address?  Mine is 7318mm@gmail.com, and anything that you and I discuss will be shared with my cousin. She and I share an Ancestry account with some of the general family tree information if you want to look.

Thank You for contacting us,

MM

Hi Marguerite, Thanks so much and I responded to you via your email. Also, I need to make a correction..my maternal grandfather's name was Joseph Timothy Rein Not John Rein. He was deceased before I was born.
