DOWD of Sligo?

Searching for my DOWD ancestors. My GGF James Dowd joined the 75th regiment and came to New Zealand in 1849. Born circa 1831 in Keash (sic) Sligo he said on his enlsitment papers at Chatham, he was a groom (with the Army horses). Parents were Andrw Dowd and Ellen nee Murphy according to his marriage certificate. (He signed with a X). He married Catherine Farrel, daughter of Mathew and Julia D??? of Dublin. He drowned in the Waipawa River, Hawkes Bay, on 10 July 1868. Sadly his wife had died in childbirth the year before and so the four living children were given into the care of Parish Priest Father Reignier to look after. The baby was adopted by the mdiwife at birth and became William Henry (James Doud-sic) Bennett. Does any of this ring a bell with anyone in Ireland please?

Hi Yvonne

I wonder if Keash could be Kilglass?

This is a record from www.rootsireland.ie which has a glitch at the moment in that it won't let me view the full record!

Thank you ColCaff. You could be correct a James DOWD gave the name when he enlisted in UK and he probably had a thick Irish accent!

I have not been able to get into RootsIreladn at the moement either, but will perservere.

Thank you for your prompt reply!! I am very excited about this development in my quest.

Doesn't add up to my James Dowd's "intentions to marry"  form in NZ that his parents were Andrew and Dowd and Ellen (Nee Murphy) though. His first born son was called Andrew Mathew (his wife's fathers supposed name was Mathew Farrel (sic) of Dublin).

Many thanks

Yvonne.

Hi Yvonne. I'm researching the Dowd family for a friend of mine who it appears is related to your great grandfather James Dowd. We live in Auckland New Zealand. He is a Bennett, a gt grandson of William Henry James Dowd/Bennett.

Re James & Catherine Dowd's NZ children:

Ellen Dowd 1857-1934, Mary Louise Dowd 1858, Anne Dowd (1860-1950), Elizabeth Dowd (1862-1949), Andrew Mathew Dowd (1863), a daughter (1865), and William Henry James Dowd/Bennett (1867-1926) who married Isabella Mary Carlyle, and they lived in Auckland.

I'd be interested in knowing any more about Andrew Dowd and Ellen Murphy and where they lived at Keash, and their parents.

How do you pronounce Dowd in Ireland? Is it 'Dood' (rhyming with boo)? or 'Dowed' (rhyming with cow)?
