Dougherty's of Donegal

Hello everybody. I'm looking for any assistance on a group of Dougherty's who left Donegal between 1825 and 1830, and lived in Paterson, New Jersey.

My 4x-grandfather, Daniel Dougherty (1800 to 1810 )his wife Margaret (Unk) and their son Hugh (born about 1830) arrived in the US on 27 September 1831. They all lived in Paterson, and settled in the same area with several other Dougherty family groups.

Daniel and Margaret had several more children - most who married and left to New York- my 3xgrandfather moved to Chicago.

Each group belongedSt. John's Catholic Church, including mine.

By 1880 only Margaret was left and I have discovered that another group of Dougherty's living with her - each who were born in Ireland: Mother- Bridget Dougherty (b.1835), son- Thomas (b. 1854) and daughter - in - law Margaret (b. 1850)

I also recieved my DNA from "Ancestry.com" where I am connecting with a large pool of Dougherty decendents from Luzerne, Pennsylvania as well as Monroe, Ohio.

My ultimate goal is to identify where my family origins arefrom in Donegal.

Thanks, Brendan.

I thought I had replied to your message last night but I don't see the reply. In any event, there are very few RC church records from Co. Donegal prior to 1850. I did search on the subscription site Roots Ireland from 1850-1860 for a Thomas Dougherty/Doherty with mother Bridget but got no record.

Dougherty/Doherty is a very common surname in Co. Donegal and many of them came from the Inishowen Peninsula. Ancestry DNA recently made some improvements with their DNA analysis of origins and you may want to check to see if they have pinpointed where in Donegal your family is from. I have Donegal connects and my DNA data now shows Inishowen for origins which matches one of my Donegal families.

There is also a volunteer site called Genesis Gedmatch genesis.gedmatch.com where you can load your raw Ancestry DNA data and see if you match people who tested with amother company and also laod their data to Genesis Gedmatch.

You can also add the Daniel Dougherty family story to our XO Chronicles site and possibly someone will see a connection  https://www.irelandxo.com/ireland-xo/history-and-genealogy/ancestor-dat…

Let me know if you have any questions.
