Double Countys??

Tipperary

Hello

I was researching my Michael Ryan/Catherine Keating  family from St. Mary's/ Clonmel Parish, County Tipperary, where I find the parents and 4 children.

I have just now discovered three more children in St. Mary's/Clonmel Paish in County Waterford, where all seven children are listed.

My questions are these:  are these two totally different geographical places, or is this just an overlap of records?  And, when I go to find them in the Tithes and Griffiths, do I search under Tipperary or Waterford?

Thank you in advance for your help, as this is very confusing.

Hi, It depends on what side of the river you live on.
If you have a look at the map of Clonmel and zoom in you will see the boundary line.

When searching, ..... Tithe then Griffiths Valuation, Parish names changed. Most churches were allowed to be re-built around the 1830's.
In the Tithes if you know the townland just put that in and not the county.
Also they drop the O' in a name.
If it is a not so common surname and a not so common Christian name, put the first 3 letters and a * and it will show all.
Some are in as  eg.  John can be Jno ......Michael came be Michl or Mick.

It depends on the year you have available for your search.
My tip is......work backwards.
Hope this helps

Barbara:both counties

Hello again!

When you have an RC parish which spans two counties like St. Mary's in Clonmel, Roots Ireland frequently posts the baptismal records in both counties. I did an all Ireland search on Roots for your family and there were double records (one in each county) for James, Michael, Timothy and Maria or Mary. Brigidt and Catherine were only listed in Waterford.

Thank you.

But when I research the Tithes and Griffiths, which county should I research?  Tipperary or Waterford?

Also, is St. Mary's/Clonmel the same as Clonmel in irishgeneaology,ie?  If not, where would I find St. Mary's/Clonmel DED?

I appreciate your time.

Margot,

Thanks for the map.  Where is St. Mary's/Clonmel on the map?  I assume it's different from Clonmel?

Thank you for your time

What year are the births?
I was asked a while ago to help and identify where a family lived, all I had was the town.
I asked for the birth years of the children, found them and in small squiggle was a word, it was the townland, it took me a while to find it, a miss spell!
To the requester it was just a squiggle.
Years please

first child James Ryan, 1835; last chiild William, 1849.

I find siblings James (1835), John (1839), Timothy (1841), and Maria (1843) in St. Mary's/Clonmel in Tipperary.  Then I find Brigid (1837), Catherine (1845) and William (1849) in St. Mary's/Clonmel in Waterford.

Thanks for your help.  This is all very confusing to me.
