Doolan, Dolan, Dooling, Dolin from Ireland to Miramichi, New Brunswick, Canada

The story of my ancestors has been largely gathered from what little information that was passed down, along with what the New Brunswick census and Church records reveal.
My Great Great Grandfather (first name unknown) and Great Great Grandmother (Bridget, approximate d.o.b. 1792) came from Ireland in 1830 (NB Census data) along with their two sons John (approximate d.o.b. 1815) and Thomas (approximate d.o.b. 1819). They came to the Miramichi area of Northumberland Co., New Brunswick (later to form part of Canada) and lived on Beaubears Island where it is believed my Great Great Grandfather and later the two sons made their living in the shipbuilding operation on the Island. They family moved from the Island to the nearby mainland around 1850 which is where my ancestral home was eventually built. Incidentally my Grandfather and his brothers and cousins would speak Gaelic when gathered at our ancestral home.

The name was spelled variously by the Parish priest (from Kerry) over the years of recoding marriages of John and Thomas and the births of their children. Eventually the common spelling of Doolan was adopted but was always pronounced Dolan. This spelling became the more commonly accepted during my Grandfathers time.

We do not have any indication of where in Ireland they came from. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Best regards,

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

This irish Times web site http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/surname/  shows you where surnames were found in the mid-19th century in Ireland which I know is 20-30 years after your family left but the info should be the same. Looks like Laois and Kilkenny have the highest totals depending on which surname you search but the names were also found in other counties.

You may want to consider autosomal DNA testing and in your case Y-DNA is also a possibility since you retain the surname of your great-great grandfather. I have had both test and you learn more with the autosomal.

Hello Roger and thank you for your resposne.  That was helpful.  My thoughts on their possible origins have always been guided by two considerations.  Firstly, how did they know of Beaubears Island situated on the Miramichi River in the province of New Brunswick and why did they go there.   That area was still frontier for the most part in 1830.  My answer to the first question was the Catholic Priests in the area who were all from Ireland and more particularly County Kerry.  From there I further adduced (although perhaps incorrectly) that the Priests wrote home to their relatives in Kerry and as such the place became known at least to the people in that part of County Kerry.  The answer to the second question becomes a little more circuitous, although also soemwhat direct and that is "to work".  My Great Grandfather's  brother "Thomas" was listed in the first census of New Brunswick as a "Shipwright".  As you may know that is a very involved trade in the shipbuilding industry.  As such, it was most likely what his father (my Great Great Grandfather) did.  A shipyard would have very few "Shipwrights" and at that time in the industry there would have been few in New Brunswick.  I have often wondered if they were recruited by the shipyard owner.   If that was so, then they would have to have come from an area in Ireland where  ships were being built.  While County Kerry is on the coast I don't know if there were shipbuilding operations there.  I noted from the site you sent me that there were "Dooling" families.  That is the spelling the Priest used initially.  In addition, there were many names common in the area where I grew up.  Names such as: Sullivan, McCarthy, Connell, Lawlor and Shea.  My Great Grandmother was Julia Bohan.  She came with her Mother and Father and family from Irleand at the same time and it would be my guess on the same ship.  There were Bohan families listed in County Kerry and in particular from a place called Kenmare, of which I know nothing.  Finally,  I have done the DNA-Y and have the results but no strong matches.  If there was a servcie in Ireland which was offering DNA testing and matching it would be very interesteing to see if any Dolans in County Kerry (or any part of Ireland) and I are a match.  In closing, I began my search almost 40 years ago and have since mapped out and recorded almost every known relative on both my Mom's side and Father's side.  Any assistance would be most appreciated.  Best regards.  HD

Harold:

Co. Kerry does sound like a likely location for your family. www.irishgenealogy.ie has the church records for Co. Kerry, however, your parish may not have records back to 1815-1819 but I would check it out. DNA testing in Ireland is just getting off the ground. Hopefully, someone will match you soon.

Interesting reading.
I am Michael Dooling, and my family traces from Co. Tipperary as far as I can tell. I did note that you mentioned John and Thomas as first names. In addition to Michael, those are family names that have stuck through generations.

My branch came to America and wound up in Central Illinois, although they were farmers, and they came to America in the mid-1800s, although I've heard stories of the family coming to America individually and in small groups. I always wonder about any relation when I hear family names.

Good luck in your search!

Hello Mike and thank you for your reply.  It was a pleasure to recieve and to read it.  I would be happy to inculde you a guest on the Miramichi Dolan Ancestry, Ancestry.Ca webiste if you wish.  On another note it would be possible through the DNA test to deermine if our families are related.  I have done the YDNA through familytree and my results are posted.   I would be happy to provide you with more detail if you wish.  Thank you once again.

Dolan Doolan

My pioneer ancestors to Australia arrived on Palestine to Sydney , leaving Plymouth 1841.  On shipping records Patrick and his wife are on separate forms both Dolan and Doolan.  THey retained the name DOolan in AUstralia and also named their rural property at Bombay near Braidwood " Roscommon" HIs wife is Elllen Rainey (sp) and they bought a son Robert William with them (aft her father) .  HIs father was Patrick ( possible time for a decessed infant Patrick before they sailed),. He was C of E THomas Atherton and John Brennan were witness to character and clergyman Rev Edward Day signed as well . He was guaranted work by Captain Grant..Both could r / w and were house servants although he could labour as well.  His father was Patrick, schoolteacher  and mother Eleanor O'Connor.

I think I have cracked it with the new record on Ancestry   BUT I cannnot find mentioned Pullelaher Barony of Athlone  Roscommon on Roots Ireland.  THis is in Unencumbered Estates   1860 Aug - Dec  with landlord Henry Matthew Smythe Esq paying rents.  Original title is 9.4.1796 from I presume R. C,. Matthew Lyster in settlement to Prot Patrick Power John Dollellan and Patrick DOlan.( Time of settlements)   It then passed to James Dolan from Henry Matthew Smythe in 1857.    other names mentioned are Martin,  Daniel Dolan, Michael Dolan , John Dolan, Patrick Dolan deceased.  Alive in 1860 are James  (Also has property in Coothall Boyle owner Parish Portrun Diocese Elphin,) Catherine x 2  and Eleanor DOLAN   -  Could this be Eleanor "O'Connor Dolan.

My questions to the helpers, Thank You. What is this parish called now or is it part of an Estate following on from Smythe Esq etc.  Then to find the bdms for that parish

If father Patrick was a school teacher would he be a registered one, going to Uni etc or local hedge teacher. ( REminder to self, check Uni of Dublin)  What would be the closest C of E Church ?  on the estate? I have looked up Rev Edward Day.  Protestant minister also for Gaols in Roscommon.

My other names are NUGENT  O'CONNOR and O'CARROLL old R C names  and Pendergast and Pratt ,.  I have CD O'Harts Irish and Anglo IRish landed gentry whoch is fantastic going through who fought where, lands exchanged x 3 in times of Charles James Cromwell Families who fought in France  etc  THose transplanted and others reinstated..  THis is also on ANcestry but it is not so easy to search for names.  Only one James Dolan Baroney of Shellburne.

This is still speculative until I find some parish records?!  With thanks  Penny Ferguson in Australia

In addition to my previous post on Dolan / Doolan  I looked up  Henry Matthew Smythe Esq.  His family and the Lysters  owned New Park Athlone Roscommon     http://www.landedestates.ie/LandedEstates/jsp/property-show.jsp?id=1171 If he paid the rent I presume my Dolans were part of the estate, so which church?  Thanks again Penny

Hello!

I was very happy to find this post concerning the Doolan, Dolan, etc. surnames from Northumberland Co., New Brunswick, Canada. My 3rd gr-grandfather was listed as Patrick Dooly married to Bridget Donaher (Donahue) who lived in Nelson with the occupation of "Sawyer" in the 1851 census. His neighbors included Thomas (a Shipwright) and John Dooly (Farmer).

As best as I can determine, Patrick arrived in St. John, NB around 1834 and made his way to Miramichi from there. Family lore said the family came from County Tyrone, but I am more inclined to think it might have been County Longford. Patrick left Ireland from Dublin which would make more sense to me if he lived inland.

When Patrick passed, he was buried in the Malcolm cemetery/St. Patrick's RC Church Cemetery with the last name of Dowling on his stone. I'm not sure at what point the name switched over to Dowling, but that's what we have been going by since.

Hopeful someone will recognize some of this info. to help piece the family together. The Dolan name appears to be very widespread in Ireland.

Hello All, Pleased to 'meet' all of you! Hope you are well? To throw another spanner into the works, my Gg'mother was Mary Dooling wife of Hugh Alexander MacDonald, son of Alexander MacDonald & Janet/Jennet/Jessie Catherine Young. They resided in Bloomfield Ridge, NB, Canada. One of their children was Jessie Agnes MacDonald, born in Bloomfeld Ridge, NB, who married my G'father, Leaman Livingston Hilton from Yarmouth, NS (which his family had helped found in the person of Capt. Amos Hilton, who originally came from Manchester, Mass, USA. Anyone know of a mention of Mary Dooling/Dowling/Do(o)lan in their family lines? Don't mean to complicate things further! Be well, Jack MacDonald-Hilton.

Pardon me for jumping in, I have just resolved the Dooling/Doolan/Dolan Qaundry as far as my Gg'mother is concerned, she was Mary Doolan MacDonald (1858-2/23/1896, married to Hugh Alexander MacDonald (1854-1931) of Bloomfield Ridge, NB, Canada. Her Parents were John Edward Doolan & Mary Catherine McLaughlan (sp?), I think that they were from Co. Cork, Ireland? Mary had at least one Sibling, Patrick Doolan (1856-?) Any more info. would be appreciated both up & down the Line? Thank you, Jack MacDonald-Hilton
