Dobbin Family of Wine Street & St. John's Parish (Seeking info on Thomas Dobbin, Tanner, c. 1770–1856)
Hello everyone,
I am researching my direct ancestors, the Dobbin family of Sligo Town, and I am hoping someone with local knowledge of St. John's Parish or Sligo history might be able to help.
Through primary documents (Griffith’s Valuation, parish marriage records, and period obituaries), we have firmly established the following line:
Thomas Dobbin Sr. ("the Tanner"): Born c. 1770–1774, died c. 1856 in Sligo. He was a master tanner with premises on the North Side of Wine Street (Rathedmond) and land at Knappagh Beg.
His Known Sons:
Abraham Dobbin: Merchant, Borough Magistrate, and Mayor of Sligo in 1861 (died Jan 1870, buried in St. John’s).
Lt. Thomas Dobbin Jr.: Sligo Militia / Coney Island (died Nov 1860, buried in St. John’s; his family later emigrated to Australia).
John Dobbin: Merchant who moved to Liverpool with direct trade/family ties to Brazil.
We know the family attended the Church of Ireland (St. John's Parish) and that the family burial vault is located in St. John’s Churchyard on John Street.
What we are trying to find:
Any transcriptions, photos, or details from the Dobbin family gravestone/vault in St. John’s Churchyard (e.g., recorded by John C. McTernan or local surveys) that might mention Thomas Dobbin Sr.'s parents or earlier dates.
Any 18th-century records of tanners or merchants named Dobbin in Sligo prior to 1800, or mentions in the historic Sligo Corporation / Freeman Rolls.
If anyone has local records, cemetery transcripts, or connections to the Dobbin name in Sligo, I would be deeply grateful for your insights!
Warm regards from Brazil,
Daniel Dobbin
