Dennis McCarthy (Born about 1838) & Catherine Daily (Born about 1838), County Cork, Left due to Famine

In Search of the Mother and Father of both Dennis McCarthy and Catherine Daily. I am the 4th oldest living McCarthy (male) Descendant of Dennis McCarthy & Catherine Daily of County Cork, Ireland and it is believed that Dennis McCarthy left Ireland due to the Patato Famine. There isa recorded 200 family members to date who are Descendants of Dennis McCarthy and Catherine Daily who were Married 3 Febuary 1866 in Washington, D.C. Most family members were born, married and died in the general area of Washington, D.C. I want to connect the McCarthy family members linage of Ireland and the United States of America. As well as reconnect with M

Dear David

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out and apologies for the very long delay in getting back to you. I hope McCarthy descendants will be in touch with you  - your message will remain here permanently and will be readable by anyone researching the family.

Does the US marriage record for Denis and Catherine name their parents or fathers' names at all?

Best wishes

Dear David and Clare,

I am a descendent of Daniel McCarthy and Ellen Bohen (or Bohan).  They were married in Muinteverra, Cork (or Muentervare, Cork) on May 15, 1855.  They emigrated  to the US shortly thereafter and settled in Auburn, NY and then Rochester, NY. They are listed as Donald and Ellen McCarthy in the 1860 census for Auburn, NY. I am sure that is a mispronunciation of Daniel as all the other information matches what I know about my McCarthy family including their 3 children: Eugene, Daniel (also listed as Donald) and Mary.  Since Eugene was born in 1857 in Auburn, they must have immigrated to the US between 1855 and 1857.  I have not been able to find their immigration or emigration records yet.  My mother Alice McCarthy was born and raised in Rochester, New York.  She went to Ireland to celebrate her 70th birthday and I am planning on going in the summer of 2017 to celebrate mine in honor of her and my Irish heritage.  I want to make it a geneology trip, not a typical tourist visit.  The name Muinterverra doesn't seem to be on modern maps.

Clare, can you help me know where Muinterverra is located and what it might be called today. I want to research both my McCarthy and Bohen ancestors so any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated.  If we can identify any relatives between now and then that still live in Ireland I would very much like to meet them or see any property related to my ancestors.  I was able to trace my Scheg ancestors in Germany and actually see the house my great-grandfather and his ancestors had lived in.

David, do you have any information on my ancestors in Ireland.  Or do you know what happened to the son Daniel McCarthy born around 1858 in Auburn, NY?  I have census information and birth and death for Eugene born in 1857 and his sister Mary born in 1860 but can't find what happened to son Daniel after he got older.

Clare,

This is awesome.  Thank you and please thank Shane Wilson.

I have since been told the parish where Daniel and Ellen were married is Durrus-Muintir Bhaire. I see Durrus on the map so I am guessing that is where the parish would be located.  Durrus, however, is listed as a civil parish and Daniel was Roman Catholic.  Also, Durrus has 2 baronys according to the map: Bantry and West Carbery.  Can you or Shane help me clarify which one contains Durrus-Muintir Bhaire.

Thanks,

Kathleen

Hi Kathleen

Our website mostly runs on the basis of the civil parish so so have to convert the RC parish to the civil in order to join the correct parish page on our site. I wouldn't worry too much about the barony at this stage. What is of most importance to you is that Durrus is associated with two civil parishes Durrus and Kilcrohane.

If you go to this page you will find the RC Muintir Bhaire Diocesan page with a link to the church location that you can zoom into down to street level.

Hope this helps

Clare

Clare,

Your comments have been extremely helpful.  I now have a good idea of where to focus some of my travel to Ireland. I want to keep trying to locate it more precisely and to locate any relatives that may still be in Ireland.  Therefore, I have started a new post for Daniel McCarthy and Ellen Bohan.  I wasn't able to copy and paste your valuable posts to that post. Are you able to do that or could you repeat the links to the map, diocese, etc.

Also, if I understand correctly, it would be good for me to join the Durrus and Kilcrohane civil parishes on this site. That sounds like a great idea.  How do I do that?

Hi Kathleen

All you have to do is log in using your username and password and go to the top of the page where you will see a box that asks you to enter parish name. It will bring up each individual parish and you can then click join each from there.

Let me know if you have any problems

Best wishes

Hi Clare,

I joined the communities referenced above but there is no real activity there.  I am now scheduled to fly to Cork, Ireland May 25, 2017.  I will be staying at the Macdonald Kinsdale Spa and Resort which I understand is about an hour from the Muinterverra peninsula where my ancestors lived.  Do you have any recommendations for a driver and guide who could help me persue my McCarthy and Bohane search a couple of days.  I would be interested in any Catholic cemetaries in the Muinter Bahir area where I found their marriage records., meeting any McCarthy's still in that area and anything else you might suggest that would further my efforts to connect to my McCarthy and Bohane relatives. Thanks once again for any help you can give me.
