Denahy's of Cork

I am attempting to find information on my great grandmother and her family. Ellen Denahy was born 16 March 1844 at Macroon(m) County Cork. Her father was Denis Denahy, farmer, and mother Honora Murphy.

She emigrated to Australia in 1863 on board the 'Fiery Star' and married William Joseph Quinn from Limerick in 1867 at Ipswich Queensland Australia.

I have tried searching the 1901 and 1911 census, Wills and Parish records without success but this could be due to my incompetence.

I would appreciate any details of her family circumstances. Father stated on her Wedding Cert to be a farmer, (employer or employee?), details of any siblings, and deaths of parents.

Thank you

Siblings: Patrick baptised 27/12/1835; Bridget 24/11/1841 & Margaret 31/10/1845

Family address when given Bridgemount parish CLONDROHID

I couldn't find the parents' marriage record on this site or www.irishgenealogy.ie/ (free site)

No luck in the early Irish censuses, Tithe Applotments or Griffiths Valuation either I'm afraid.

G'day Col

Thanks for the prompt reply, I really appreciate it. You people do a great job and service.

I just can't fathom the 1839 date of Baptism. All records I have, Marriage and death cetificates, point to dob as 1844. A 'typo' maybe?

I am assuming the family address Bridgemount is a locality within the parish of Clondrohid. Just in case I ever get back to Ireland.

Thanks again

Cheers

Terry

Hi Col,

I'm not sure if my Denahy/Dennehy's are connected to these but I'm hoping you/someone can help my find the missing connection. The name seems to have been Denahy in Ireland but changed to Dennehy in Australia.

My GG grandfather was;

John William Denahy/Dennehy b.1838 in Churchtown Parish, Cork (died 14/12/1916 in Melbourne) ; married Deborah Mary Haly/Healy b.7/5/1838 at Church of Assumption,(died 5/12/1921 in Richmond Melbourne). Married 15/12/1858 in Milford, Freemont, Ireland. They immigrated to Australia in 1862. Their son Cornelius John b.31 oct 1858 in Church of Assumption, Mallow, immigrated to Austrtalia at about 22yrs old. He was left with the Haly/Healy family.

John William's Death certificate has his mother as 'unknown Singleton'

The only Denahy/Singleton I could find is;

Cornelius Denahy/Dennehy b. 1810? In Mallow? Died 1862? In Kanturk? Married Catherine/Catharine Singleton  b. 1816?

They married 22/6/1834 in Churchtown Parish, Cork.

I have found a Catherine Denahy living in Ballybahallagh in 1853 Griffiths rego but no mention of Cornelius

Cornelius and Cath Singletons daughter Catherine bap 18 june 1835 in Liscaroll cert says they lived in Ballybahallagh, so possibly the same people. They also had a child Ellen bap.10 sept 1843 in Milford. I could not find any other children listed for them.

I am hoping you can help me find the parents/sibling of John William. or find proof that Cornelius and Catherine are his parents.

Cuold you suggest what I should do next as I have exhausted the subscriptions I have I think and have searched all the records at the NLI. Also put posts on various sites without success.

Many thanks

Cherie

Hi Terry

We have several Ellen's and Cornelius's in our tree, which I worked on about 10 years ago. I think they are all a little more recent than your Ellen, but please see the attached pics which may be of use.
