Davidson- Co Tyrone.

I am very excited that I will be coming to Ireland, either the 1st or 2nd week in June 2026. while I'm there I would love to have some assistance related to my Davidson Ancestors if possible. Thomas & Annie nee Porter Davidson had children Johathon, William, Christopher (my great grandfather) Charlotte and Thomas Edmond Davidson (only known family) Thomas & Annie died Munderrydoe 1874 & 1870. (have certificates.

Christopher born c 1841 married Eliza Jane Davidson 1864 Cookstown (have Certificate) He was from Munderrydoe Pomeroy and Eliza Jane from Derrygortanea, Desercreat. They had 8 children all for either Allen or Moree and registered at Cookstown. I believe Allen and Moree are right next to each other. 2 of these boys only lived to a very young age who died at Allen or Moree Ireland.(have certificates) Christopher , Eliza and family emigrated to Australia.

Glendam,

I assume you are trying to find out precisely where Christopher & Eliza Jane lived. You are correct that Allan/Allen and Mur(r)ee are immediately adjacent. I had a look at the Valuation Revision records for the period 1864-1880 on the PRONI website VAL/12/B/37/17B. There’s no sign of Christopher in either townland in that period. Nor are many labourer’s cottages listed. So what that likely means is that Christopher’s cottage would have been of too low a value to be listed. Consequently there’s no easy way of establishing precisely where he lived. (And there may have been more than 1 home if he moved between the 2 townlands). Most labourers cottages are long demolished (there no longer being any need for them. And in some cases they would just have collapsed anyway). The modern Oughterard Rd passes along the joint border of Allen and Murre. That’s maybe as close as you’ll be able to get.

I had slightly better luck with Thomas Davidson. He is listed in Griffiths Valuation as having plot 13b in Munderrydoe. That was a house (a labourer’s cottage) on Arthur Whiteside’s 17 acre farm. Looking at the farm today on a satellite view, it’s on the modern Corrycroar Rd. The land is still farmland but I think most of the older buildings have been cleared away. I see 2 or 3 new properties alongside the road. The Valuation Revision records show that after Thomas Davidson died his cottage was occupied by Rose Neill. She is deleted in 1882 at which time the cottage was noted as “down” ie it had collapsed or been demolished. VAL/12/B/37/16D

There are examples of typical labourer’s cottages in the Ulster American Folk Park near Omagh and also the Folk Museum at Cultra, near Belfast.

Glendam:

Please see the message below from Robert Watt, one of our IRO volunteers.

I am Robert Watt born near Pomeroy in Co. Tyrone in 1941.

I am very familiar with the townlands (areas of farm land) you mentioned in your listing.

I am particularly interested in Jonathan Davidson ( the brother of your great grandfather) because he married Jane Trimble, you see my mother was Hannah Trimble born at Munderrydoe, Pomeroy in 1916.

I have an email address of a Hilton Davidson from Co. Tyrone who is a fellow researcher.

My mail address is  rwdwatt@gmail.com

From Robert Watt.
