David Leacock 1811-1886

Searching for any information on David Leacock and family, as well as wife Catherine Dawson’s family.

The information I have is that they married in St. Mary’s church, Castlecomer County, Kilkenny Ireland on March 5, 1839 when he was 28 years old and Catherine was 20 years old. She was born in Dublin in 1819.

Daughter Grace was born 1840 in Castlecomer, Kilkenny.

Dsughter Ellen born and died 1842 in Castlecomer

Daughter Catherine born 1845 in Ontario Canada

son William born 1849 in Ontario

Unsure exactly when they immigrated to Canada but between 1842 and 1845.

looking for any additional information about their family in Ireland, parents, siblings, property owned, immigration details.

They were my great-great grandparents.

Thank you in advance for any assistance.

The subscription site Roots Ireland has a February 28 1813 baptismal record for a David Laycock with father George Laycock and mother Anne, The transcribed record shows he was Roman Catholic. The parish shown is Mothel which is a civil parish south of Castlecomer.I believe this should be the Church of IRELAND PARISH IN Mothel.

David had a brother Thomas baptized February 16 1814 and another brother Edward baptized January 7 1817. All three records indicated the family lived in Coen.

I did not find a marriage record for George and Anne but did find a February 25 1821 marriage record for a George Laycock who married Jane Boothe at the Castlecomer Church of Ireland parish. George and Jane had at least five children because there were baptismal records for William 1822 Thomas 1824 Sarah 1826 James 1838 Jeremiah 1841. Possibly there was a gap in records between 1826 and 1838 so maybe more children.

Susan:

The official spelling of the townland was Gorteen. I found one Leacock family in the 1901 censsus for Gorteen. https://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Kilkenny/Castlecomer/Gorteen/1459378/

I assume this George Leacock was a grandson to the older George.

By 1911 George was deceased. https://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Kilkenny/Moneenroe/Gorteen/566151/

His death record from 1910 (see 2nd record at the link) showed that he died in the Lunatic Asylum. https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1910/05435/4519995.pdf

Hello Roger,

Thank you so much for this information. I am a novice to ancestry research, but my father conducted extensive research which he documented on ancestry.com prior to his death.

the information you provided below appears to match up fairly closely to his information for David Leacock that estimated a birth date of around 1811, and he has several Canadian census records that indicate the religion as Church of Ireland,

… a February 28 1813 baptismal record for a David Laycock with father George Laycock and mother Anne, The transcribed record shows he was Roman Catholic. The parish shown is Mothel which is a civil parish south of Castlecomer.I believe this should be the Church of IRELAND PARISH IN Mothel. David had a brother Thomas baptized February 16 1814 and another brother Edward baptized January 7 1817. All three records indicated the family lived in Coen

My father also has gedcom records that show David Leacock and Catherine Dawson were married in St. Mary’s church in Castlecomer Co. there is also a death record for their child in the parish records for that church. Another record indicates baptismal records for 2 children and references 1840 Colliery Ch. Moneerue, Castelcomer. Those births were Grace - born 1840 - baptised 26 January and Ellen - Baptised January 1842.

i will be visiting Ireland in August 2025 and am interested to know if these churches are still active. I don’t know what else to look for but am looking forward to visiting the area where these ancestors lived.

the info you provided re David’s parents is info my father did not have so I’ll be adding that to his records.

thank you so much for your help.

Sue
