CURRAN'S FROM DRIMLAGHTAFIN

DonegalInver (Donegal)

Hi my name is George Curran and I live in Glasgow, Scotland. I traced my GGG grandfather James Curran and Rose Anne Curran ( nee McClusky) to Edinburgh they had a son Denis born in 1858 and later moved to Glasgow. The only information I had was that James was born in 1809 and married Rose Anne in 1844 in Donegal. I have recently found out that my ancestors are from the parish of Inver, Donegal after I was contacted by a Peter Murphy a distant cousin who I cant thank enough for provding the information.

James's father was Denis Curran and his mother was Mary Curran ( nee Gallagher) they lived in Drimlaghtafin, Inver according to the Tithe applotment 1834.

Rose Anne's father was Peter McCloskey and her mother was Bridget McCloskey (nee Carr) lived in Tievedooly, Inver.

Any information regarding my ancestors would be greatly appreciated.

I had booked up to come over and visit this area at the end of March 2020 but this was cancelled due to COVID.

The tithes for 1825 list Shane Currin and Denis Currin farming in Drumlaghtafin:

http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/results.jsp?…

Griffiths Valuation for 1857 lists Denis Curran. He farmed plot 7 a 10 acre farm jointly with John. This was the only Curran farm in the townland then. I don’t see deaths for Denis or Mary in the statutory records suggesting they died before 1864 (when death registration started). Likewise no John, so he too probably died before 1864.

I see a death for a Patrick Curran at Drumlaghtafin in 1892, aged 72. He was a bachelor and the informant was his sister Ellen:

Probate abstract:

Administration of the estate of Patrick Curran late of Drumlaghtafin County Donegal Farmer who died 29 October 1892 granted at Londonderry to Ellen Curran Spinster. Effects £12 0s. 7 1/2d.

Ellen died in 1906 aged 77. She was a spinster:

1901 census:

Possibly Patrick & Ellen were siblings to James b 1809?

Unfortunately the parish records only start in 1861 so tracing the family back will be challenging.

Many thanks Elwyn,

Would it be possible to search on Rose Anne's father was Peter McCloskey and her mother was Bridget McCloskey (nee Carr) lived in Tievedooly, Inver.

Regards

George Curran

George,

Sorry I cannot find anything on the McCloskey family of Tievedooly.

The Tithe applotment records for Tievdooly (c 1830) appear to be lost.

Griffiths Valuation for 1857 lists 10 households in the townland. None occupied by a McCloskey (or variant) indicating the family had left or died before that year. There was a James Carr who had plot 2, a 10 acre farm.

The 1901 census of Tievdooly has 3 Carrs:

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Donegal/Inver/Tievedooly/

In 1911 there were 6 houses in the townland, 3 occupied by Carrs:

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Donegal/Dunkineely/Tie…

Death registration started in 1864. No sign of Peter or Bridget McCloskey, again suggesting they had died before that year. There’s a James Carr death registered in Donegal town in 1867 aged 87. Could be James from Tievdooley. You would need to order a photocopy of the certificate from GRO Roscommon to find out.

Inver RC parish records don’t start till 1861. I fear that tracing back before that may prove very difficult.

Good Afternoon,

I am looking for more information regarding below

Administration of the estate of Patrick Curran late of Drumlaghtafin County Donegal Farmer who died 29 October 1892 granted at Londonderry to Ellen Curran Spinster. Effects £12 0s. 7 1/2d.

Ellen died in 1906 aged 77. She was a spinster:

When Ellen died is there any records of who was granted her estate.

When Patrick and Ellen died do you know if there is any church death records

Many thanks

George Curran

George,

The word administration in the probate abstract tells us that Patrick did not leave a will. So he died intestate and his estate would be shared out amongst his relatives in accordance with intestacy law. As a bachelor it is likely to have gone to any living brothers and sisters. The probate file itself was destroyed in the 1922 fire, so no further information exists on this estate.

Few RC parishes keep burial records, so it’s unlikely there are any other death records apart from the statutory certificate you already have. He might have a gravestone of course. Have you checked for that?
