Curley family of Roscommon

Hello,

Thank you for setting up this site. Based upon what I've read I figure I would ask for your help in locating my great-great grandfather and his family.

I'm trying to find additional information about the family of a Patrick Curley. Patrick along with his brother Bernard arrived in America on 3 Mar 1849 at the port of Boston, Massachusetts. Arriving with them were their three cousins Edward Ignatius, Thomas and Catherine. Patrick and Bernard were born in the 1820s and the others were born in the 1830s. Based upon the married record of Patrick his father's name is Bernard. Patrick married a Margaret Coyle in January 1850. I don't have any additional information about Patrick's brother Bernard.

The cousins list their parents as Thomas and Honora. As far as I can tell all of them lived in County Roscommon before leaving for America. I found this information on the Naturalizations records of both Thomas and Edward. As for Catherine, I did locate a baptism listing in the village of Athlone in Roscommon Ireland stating Catherine Curley being baptized on 13 Jun 1837 at St. Peters in the diocese of Elphin. Her fathers name is listed as Thomas and her mothers name is listed as Honoria and her godparents are listed as Jacob Lenson and Anna Walch maybe Walsh. It is hard to read her last name. This is all the information I have on Catherine except for her entry form.

I know Irish records during this time period are incomplete and are hard to locate, but any help you provide me about the Curley family will be greatly appreciated.

Again, thank you for the web site and for any assistance you can provide me.

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I looked on Roots Ireland which is a subscription site. Fortunately, records for St. Peter's Athlone go back to 1789. Here is the link to the register. http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0538  I only located one Patrick Curley baptismal record and it was in St. Peter's in 1814 which I know is earler than you believed. See record below. I located three siblings with those parents but could not find a Bernard. The only Bernard with father Bernard had a mother named Bridget Currien. See below. The siblings were Eleanor 1812 Jane 1819 and Catherine 1825.  I would go thru the register and see if you can find other records.

Let me know what questions you have and we can look further.

Hi Castlemore Roscommon,

Thank you for the information.  I will review it and try to determine if this my Bernard. There is a Bernard Curley I found living in St John N. B. , Canada who fits that age range.  I'm beginning to wonder if his age was recorded incorrectly when he entered America as my Bernard did state on his form he was heading to , N. B., Canada.

Again, thank you for your help.

As for John Mullins. I have never come across the name while searching the Curley Family history.

Hi Charlie, I don't know if you're still interested, but Bernard Curley is my great-great-grandfather. He died in 1899 in Ballston Spa in upstate New York. He was a successful farmer. According to what my grandfather told me, Bernie lost a leg to an infection. However, my grandfather said that Bernie Curley did the work of two men. I assume he left Ireland to escape the Famine. Jeff Cole
