Cunninghams of Roscommon

Hello, werecently discovered by DNA results that we are descendants of the Cunningham family, originally from Scotland and who later moved to Roscommon, Ireland. Our direct descendent is Richard Cunningham, who sailed away from Ireland to America, but was shipwrecked on the way and ended up in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Canada.

Does anyone have more history of the family? It would be great if someone can share family information with us. Thank you so much. CindiClark-Elander

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Cunningham was a fairly common surname in Co. Roscommon in the mid-19th century. Do you have an approximate birth year for Richard? Church record availability is more limited the further you go back to the beginning of the 19th century.

My mother is a Cunningham of this lineage, and my aunt has a handwritten history by Mrs. Harriet Francis Cunningham Hart, a granddaughter of Major John Cunningham. I have just started transcribing the history. Richard Cunningham lived 1748-1823. I'm attaching a photo of a page from the handwritten history.

Hello,

I am also a descendant of Richard Cunningham who emigrated with his siblings and mother from Roscommon and settled in Nova Scotia.  I am particularly interested in the handwritten history written by Mrs. Harriet Francis Cunningham Hart.  The Harts and Cunninghams lived in Antigonish, Nova Scotia and had many children and descendants.  I have spent many years trying to find information about the Cunningham family before they left Roscommon and why they left without the father of the family.  One site gives the name of the father as John, but most say he was unknown.  The mother is always listed only as "Mrs. Elizabeth Cunningham" with no maiden name or name of her husband.  Does Harriet's history go beyond the arrival in Canada?  An information would be much appreciated!

It seems to me that John Cunningham (b1721) was married to Helen (Eleanor) Aird.  Records seem to indicate they both died in Nova Scotia, which means they likely came over with Richard and his brother John Cunningham in or around 1761.   I was born in "Eleanor's" house in New Glasgow, NS.  My father always referred to the house as "Eleanor's" and it was built at some in the late 1700s or early 1800s.

Would love any updates you can offer....
