Cunningham, Hinchey, Scully families

I would like to make contact with anyone researching the following families. All may have a connection to county Galway (but I cant be sure) and to each other, how is what I would like to know.

CUNNINGHAM John b 1830-1835 Ire., married Maggie (?) and went to New York, NY, USA.

HINCHEY Patrick b 1860 Ire., married Sarah daughter of John Cunningham.

SCULLY Andrew b 1816 Ire., married (1) Bridget possibly in Ireland, married (2) Bridget LEONARD in Durham England in 1856.

I think SCULLY is the connecting family to the others.

Hoping someone has these families in their tree.

Thanks.

Mary

Mary:

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I checked on Find My Past and there was an 1835 and an 1836 baptismal records for a John Cunningham in Co. Galway but we would need his parents names to verify any records located.

Was Patrick Hinchey born in Ireland? I did see an 1858 and 1859 baptismal reocrds for a Patrick Hinchey both in Co. Clare but we would need his parents names to help confirm.

Was Sarah Cunningham born in Ireland or America?

For Andrew Scully, I located one baptismal record in 1818 in Co. Tipperary but again parents names would help.

Let me know.

Hello Roger,

I also found John Cunningham 1835 Baptismal records on FMP in the parish of Annaghdown. However, I have no way at this stage of knowing if this is the correct John.  Everything I know about John comes from the 1870 US Census.  It is also this census that indicates that Sarah was born in Ireland 1865, and also in the household is a Catherine Cunningham aged 60 b 1810 Ireland. A mother perhaps?

After her marriage to Patrick Hinchey, Sarah’s place of birth fluctuates between Ireland and New York. I haven’t been able to find any immigration information for the Cunningham family.

The 1900 US Census indicates that Patrick Hinchey was born in Ireland 1860. I don’t know anything about his parents.

Andrew Scully’s father may have been Thomas d about 1865 in Ireland.  Possible brother of Andrew is Edward L. – no other details.   I do have details of Andrews children one of which is Sabina/Sophia b 1852 and is my Gt Grandmother.

The reason why I’m trying to tie these families together is a photograph taken in Saratoga, NY, late 1920’s early 1930’s with the tantalizing words on the back “ Nora Cunningham Mum’s first cousin, Margarita Hinchey her second cousin and William Greaney”   I have established that Nora Cunningham is a sister to Sarah Cunningham Hinchey. Margarita is Sarah’s daughter, William Greaney my grand uncle, and Mum is my Gt Grandmother Sabina/Sophia, daughter of Andrew Scully. The message is written by William. I just would like to know how they all fit together.

Any help is appreciated.

Hi Mary, I know this is a late reply and you may already have the connection between the Cunningham/ Scully/Hinchey/Greaney family. Hannah/Nora Scully and Thomas Scully were children of Andrew Scully and Bridget Leonard, they both went to USA. Hannah when she was young and Thomas after his wife died, you have all the info on this. I believe that Bridget Leonard may have been the sister of Margaret Leonard, who married John Cunningham, who were the parents of Sarah E Cunningham, who married Patrick Hinchey. Hannah/Nora Scully was living with the Hinchey family as a cousin in the 1930 census. You already know the connection of Sabina Scully/Greaney family in New Zealand etc. I can't find a marriage for Margaret Leonard and John Cunningham. Hope this helps. Jo

Hello Jo, A reply is never too late, so thank you. Over the years I have come to the same conclusion as you have. It is certainly the most logical but finding the paperwork has been the difficult part. A marriage certificate/entry for Margaret Leonard and John Cunningham would help a lot. Once again many thanks for your reply Mary

Hi Mary Thanks for your reply, I have searched for a death certificate for Margaret Leonard Cunningham, but can't find one. Do you know exactly what the proof is that she was a Leonard? As we can find my marriage, I am presuming someone has seen birth records for her children. I do not have Ancestry World Wide at moment, because I have very little use for it. I have been trying to find Hannah Scully after 1930 when she was living with the Hinchey's, but no luck. Strange because she is around on all the others. I think I may have found a possible death for her in Torrance, Los Angeles, 18th or 12th April 1950. Her DOB on the death cert is 21.3.1869, born England, which would fit with her birth reg on Free BMD, she was baptised 3.4.69. She died as a result of a motor car accident, the car overturned, she was taken to hospital with multiple injuries, but died 2 weeks later. No father/mothers name given on death cert. She was buried at Holy Cross Cemetry, Culver City, Los Angeles on 21.4.1050. Death Cert is on Familysearch.org. It's a shame she did not put her Mother and Father's name on, but maybe she was too poorly to give much info. If this is her, she is a long way from New York. Best regards Jo

Hi Jo, I have spent the afternoon going through my old Scully/Hinchey/Cunningham research and found amongst it some emails that I think must be yours! Was your Gt Gt Grandmother Hannah/Honor Scully born 1821? If so, hello again! Like you I don't have a full Ancestry membership, but I have a friend who has, and I think we have found Hannah Scully in USA 1940 census. She is listed as Hannak Scally just to make life difficult. She is still in Saratoga Springs NY. The second thing I found was an 1851 England Census for Margaret Leonard in Durham. This could be the mother of Bridget Leonard as there is a Bridget and Margaret listed in the same household. And thirdly in my notes, I have a random note "James Leonard 1789-1867 and Margaret O'Neil 1795-1873, Bridget's parents" My email is mary@themercers.org - happy for you to contact me. Cheers Mary

Jo, I have found evidence that the death certificate on Family Search is our Nora Scully. Several notices are in Los Angeles newspapers, and one confirms the Hinchey connection. Hopefully, I can upload it here. Otherwise please contact me via email. cheers Mary

Doesn't look like it worked. Here is a transcription of it. Miss Nora Scully Requiem Mass was offered at Immaculate Conception Church on April 21 for Miss Nora Scully, 82, of 832 S. Union Ave. She is survived by a niece, Mrs Margaret Hinchey of New York. Interment, Holy Cross Cemetery. White & Callanan, funeral directors. Nora was a passenger in the car that overturned. Mary

Hi Mary, Yes my g. g. Grandmother is Honor/Hannah Scully, and I do believe we have been in contact before, although a long time ago. The Bridget Leonard you found in the 1851 census in Durham, with mother and sister Margaret, I am not too sure this is the Bridget Leonard who married Andrew Scully in 1856 in Stella, Gateshead. In July 1852, Andrew Scully and Bridget Leonard were still in Tuam, Galway, when on 29th July 1852, a Sibby Scully was baptised d/o Andrew Scully and Bridget Leonard. She could have returned to Ireland, of course. I will do some more digging on this. Bridget Leonard gives her fathers name as John Leonard on her marriage cert. Thanks for the transcription of Nora's Obit and finding her in 1940, that ties up a few loose ends. The 1950 US census is free, and I have looked for Nora Scully, I am presuming she would have been at the Los Angeles address, but cant find her. The census would have been taken a day before her accident. Once again many thanks Jo
