Crowe family of County Clare

Hi I am looking for any information on the Crow/e (Croagh) family of County Clare. Michael Crowe and Catherine Hastings married around 1820-1830. They had at least 5 children - Matthew, Honora, Margaret, Bridget, Michael. It would seem that the family immigrated to Victoria Australia at some stage. Honora was born in Erina County Clare around 1837. She married John Keating in Kyneton Victoria in 1859. Her brother’s Matthew and Michael both died in Victoria as well. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Tara Judy,

I have checked for the baptism of an Honora Hastings from Errina, parish of Kiltenanlea with negative results.

The civil records are from January 1st 1864 and you are depending on church records which are scarce in rural areas.

In regard to the surname "Crowe" it was fairly common in the County. Clare County Library clarelibary.ie/genealogy list the name in the 1901 Irish Census.

It also lists Griffith's Valuation c1850 and the Tithe records from 1823 to 1844.

You can access those records at www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith and Tithe at www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy for free.

The parish of Kiltenanlea covers the area of O'Callaghans Mills and Broadford to O'Briensbridge.

There is a townland named Errinagh in the parish of Feakle, Tulla Upper.

McCoy

Many thanks McCoy for your reply to my query. I am sorry that I misled you - Catherine, Michael Crowe’s wife was a Hastings, however Honora, the ancestor who I’m currently researching, her surname is Crowe.

Many thanks for the ideas of where to continue searching. We are hoping to travel to Ireland later this year and maybe, walk in our ancestors footsteps.

Tara Judy,

My mistake in not reading your Post a little more carefully!

If you are coming to Ireland, I attach some detail of the areas you are likely to visit.

McCoy

Hello,

Crowe originates in Clare on the border with Galway

I have a one name study for Crowe - and it's name variations - for Ireland and have accumulated thousands of records - almost 100% - new records keep appearing :)

I can't find a record that you suggest

I have a Patrick Hastings - Elizabeth Crowe marriage 11 Jun 1835 in Miltown Malbay the image is available with that date on the Nat Lib of Ireland website.They had a child Honour Hastings in 1845 but with no recorded sponsors (god-parents) which means it is difficult to place this couple wiith others. Sometimes there is a reciprocal marriage (surnames are reversed?)

I also have entries of Hastings as wedding witnesses in Doonass & Trugh parish and Cratloe parish on the Clare Limerick border.

If you have no luck with this couple I suggest thinking about cousins who may have travelled with families (Family tickets were cheaper than singles?) or cousins and related families arrived at an earleir or later date? Spread the search a little at both ends - records in arrival countries often reveals family that is not recorded in Ireland - they we not important to the Irish and imposed by the English overlords?

Let me know if you need further help or the details of the records?

Shay
