Croghan/McCormick

Looking for information on my g-grandparents Thomas Crogan (parents Martin Croghan & Bridget ?Bropson) and Honora McCormick (parents Patrick McCormick & Bridget ?last name). They settled in Essex county, New Jersey first, were married there, had two children and moved on to Wisconsin.

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Can you provide approximate years of birth for Thomas and Honora?

Sorry! I searched Roots Ireland and did not find the baptismal records. The surnames are common in Co. Roscommon so that is one possible location.

I keep coming to the conclusion that they may have come from this county, but hit a wall there! I have the maiden name spelling for mother of Thomas as Bropson. Someone told me to try Brobson, which I did and found death record for Bridget Brobson in New Jersey in 1865. The place and date seem to match--on that Harry Brobson is listed as father. Her youngest son was named Henry, so possibilities point to this. Do you find any records there for Harry (possibly Henry) Brobson?

Roger,

A update to my inquiry on Henry. Also, a few other spellings of surname - Brabzon or Bradazon. I think he may have John & Peter as siblings. I think he married Eleanor McCormick. The spouse to Peter may be Margarita Nicholson. I don't know who the spouse is for John, but he had a daughter, Bridget (b 1802, who married Edward Neary (b 1800) in 1827. This is still all in Roscommon County.

Can you find any information further on baptism/ marriage dates? Or on parents of above mentioned names.

Thank you,

Peggy

Peggy:

I went back to the subscription site Roots Ireland and found three Bropson marriage records in the RC parish of Elphin.

February 26 1827 Patrick Croghan/Mary Bropson

February 26 1827 J. Bropson/Thomas Lanaghan  NOTE one witness was a Henry Bropson Alson from a review of the parish register, I'm not sure that J is the correct transcription of the first initial of the Bropson bride.

February 27 1827 Brigid Bropson/Edmund Nary

Here is the parish register for Elphin RC parish https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0556  There are some gaps in the early part of the 19th century

This link will take you to the parish register for February 26/27 1827. There were a number of marriages that were conducted likely right before the start of Lent.

I did find eight baptismal records for children of Henry Brapson and Eleanor McCormick  Mary (no year transcribed) James 1810 No name 1812 Elizabeth 1814 Catherine 1816 Patrick 1819 John 1821 Ann 1824

Thanks Roger for added info.
The no name baptism year seems to fit in this family 🫰for Bridget . I am also looking for another sibling, Alice, born about 1830.

I did have marriage date for Patrick & Mary (Brabason) Croghan. I haven’t figured out how Bridget is related to Mary & how Bridget’s spouse, Martin is related to Patrick.
For Patrick & Mary, I have children; Hugh, Michael, John, Patrick, Eugene,Peter, Martin & maybe a Winifred so far. I think more children in that family.
Thank you also for full marriage date on Bridget & Edward Neary (assume Nary is alternate spelling). I believe they had children Anna Jane (1829 1830) & Edward Henry (1833).
Can you find info on Alice Brabson (sp) b abt 1830?

Any info on parents of Edward Nary/Neary?

Any info on more children of Patrick & Mary Croghan? I think Patrick died around 1859.
Thanks so much on your help on this.

Peggy:

Only found two Alice Brapson/Bropson baptismal records in Co. Roscommon both in 1822.

Alice Brapson baptized January 19 1822 Elphin RC parish father John Brapson mother Ann Casserly

Alice Brapson baptized April 4 1822 Croghan RC parish father George Brapson mother Honor Lavin

The earliest Edward Neary/Nary baptismal record in Co. Roscommon on Roots Ireland was in 1833.

Baptismal records for children of Patrick Croghan and Mary Bropson that I located were Hugh 1828 Michael 1832 Patrick 1835 Eugene 1841 Peter 1843

I have those same records for sons of Patrick & Mary. Hugh & Peter came to USA (different years, I don’t have info -Hugh first for Ca gold rush). Both end up in Wisconsin, marry & settle down. Peter, in obit, says he is one of 13 children born back in Ireland. Martin, comes to USA (New Jersey) with the mother after death of the father. I have no information on their Ireland departures or US arrivals.

Regarding Brapson (various spellings), I have Bridget married to Martin Croghan coming to USA with 3, poss 4 children around 1851-52. Alice comes single, maybe around same time or few years later, as she marries in New Jersey 1855/56. She does lists her father as Henry. DNA links me to that family line.
