County Sligo - Nevin & Waters Families

Hello,

I am currently searching for the Nevin and Waters families in Sligo and their generations back from my 2x Great Grandparents. Here is how I am linked to them:

My Father

My Grandmother, Rita Meade (born in USA)

My Great-Grandmother, Mary Nevin (born in Lower Rosses in 1878, passed in USA in 1943)

My 2xGreat Grandfather: Michael Nevin (1837-1907)

My 2x Great Grandmother: Bridget Waters (1851-?)

Some snippets of information that I have been able to confirm:

My Great-Grandmother's brother, Michael Nevin (b 1881, d. unknown but after 1969) was still alive when my Aunt visited Sligo in 1969. He has been confirmed to be a former mayor of the town of Sligo multiple times and gave testimony (see attached) to the Bureau of Military History for his National Activities in Sligo from 1916-1921.

I would like to accomplish a few things - first find some cousins hopefully in Ireland and elsewhere. I would also like to try to trace the family further back.

I know I am lucky to know this much about our family in Sligo but I would like to know more.

I believe the 1907 death is a different Michael Nevin, one that lived at , Owenbeg townland (1901 Census) coincidentally also married to a Bridget. Your Michael seems to have died in 1924 reported age 90, the informant is his son John - place of death as Rosses Lower matches that shown on the 1911 census and the births of several of his chldren, including Mary/Maria.

Based on the BMD Index Michael & Bridget likely married in 1877 (District Sligo, 1877, volume 17, page 312)

The Catholic Registers for the Parish of Ahamlish, just north of the Rosses, has a record of the marriage of Michael Nevin & Bridget Waters in 1877 (see the 4th last entry of the page). It's a fairly detailed record and incudes fathers names Daniel Nevin and Jacobi/James Waters, with a residence for the groom of Rosses, more difficult to make out for the bride - looks like Rosnol or similar.

Bridget seems to have died in 1936 - reported age 80, widow of a farmer, residence Lr. Rosses, informant Michael Nevin son

I would suggest that the residence of the bride is Rinroe which is near Grange village and in the parish of Ahamlish.

Michael Nevin born 24th November 1892 at Lower Rosses Point, died 11th July 1972, aged 79 years. Michael as Mayor with Chain of office photo & info is in "Sligo & its surroundings" by Tadhg Kilgannon published 1926, i seen a copy available on Donedeal website that shows The Mayor. Sligo Library & archives might have some info as well. I came accross article in a 1953 newspaper that Michael Nevin as Mayor was the person to get the ball rolling on the Sligo Borough Coat of Arms in 1951 Its on find a grave website.
