Hi Lisa
There is 1 Cotter in the Irish phone book in Kildorrery (www.118.ie/)
I couldn't find any Cotters in the early Irish Censuses or in Kildorrery in the later ones.
Better luck in Griffiths Valuation (http://www.askaboutireland.ie/) which has 7 Cotters in Kildorrery
The Tithe Applotments (http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/) have 326 Cotters in Cork with thses 3 from Kildorrery:

Dear Lisa:
We have 2 very knowledgeable local volunteers in the Kildorrery area and I have asked them to reply to you about this. You may expect to hear from them in the next week or so. Kildorrery has done a lot of heritage work and they are part of the Ballyhoura Development which covers that area in North Cork.
If you don't hear from them in the next two weeks, please let me know.
Kind regards,
Jane
Hi Thank you for the very useful information much appreciated Irishgeneaologyie has been very useful for the one Cotter name(Patrick) born in Glanworth. I was able to find both wives and his children but I have encountered a stumbling block with John Cotter. On his grave stone it lists his wife Nora, children: Thomas, Margaret-Mary, Catherine,Christina and William. There are no dates listed but the place called Marshalstown Is Marshalstown in Cork or Wexford? This maybe why I cannot find anything on anyone. I might be looking in the wrong county Thanks Lisa
Hi Lisa
We don't have any information to add to what we already sent you. However I have been asking around and I am trying to set up a meeting with a 94 yr old gentleman whose mother was Cotter. Will let you know how I get on.
Regards
Brenda
Hi Lisa
I made contact through a friend with 94yr old Garret McDonald but it still looks like it's going to be difficult to join the dots to connect to your ancestors. Garret's grandfather was James Cotter who married Mary Bowman. His mother Mary Anne was their daughter . His uncle Garret and his aunt Nell are buried in Molagga. He doesn't know who his grandfather's siblings were but his aunt Nell Cotter was maried to a Walsh man. Their daughter (Birdie Walsh Hannon) is still alive and has family living in this area. Sorry can't be of more help. By the way Marshalstown is in County Cork. It is about 3 miles from Kildorrery.

Brenda
Hi Brenda Thank you so much for the information You have gone above and beyond I am more determined than ever. Interesting enough that the Garrett Cotter you mentioned that is buried in Molagga might be the same one that I have seen and photographed. Garrett Cotter died on July 10, 1825 aged 72. Also I recall the last time I was to Kildorrery, I met with John Thornhill and he told that when Mary Cotter,s daughter Mary(Minnie)Barrett passed away in his home in 1962, he had to ask permission to a living Cotter relative for her to be buried there. This might be significant. What do you think? Cheers Lisa
It is possible that I am a descendant of the Kildorrery Cotters. I know that my gt. grandmother, Ellen Cotter, was born in Mitchelstown. Exactly when, I'm unsure, the census of 1911 would suggest 1873, but people were not all that accurate on their ages. She married a John Daly of Dublin. He ws born in 1860, which would suggest an older date for his wife's birth than 1873. She probably left Ireland for England sometime in the late 1880s, where she married John Daly, who was a soldier. On her second marrieage certificate, John died in 1905, her father is recorded as Patrick Cotter, an agricultural labourer. I have recently found a birth in Mitchelstown of an Ellen Cotter in 1869, father Patrick Cotter of Clonlough and mother Julia Donovan/Donoran/Donegan (?). There is also a family tree exerpt online giving Ellen's birth and her father is shown as Patrick Cotter, born 1845 in Sraherla, Kildorrery. I believe that Sraherla was at or near St. Mologga's Church. Far from certain, but it is suggestive. The only snippet family history I have about Ellen, is that one or more of her sisters became nuns.
