Cornelius Spillane

Hi all. Just discovered this site through facebook. Hope I'm using it right! I've hit a stonewall on my Irish Ancestry and thought someone may be able to help

I'm looking for information on my GGGrandfather, Cornelius Spillane. He was born in Ireland approximately 1843 based on records here in US. He died in 1895 in NY. He married Catherine Connery (or Condon, it's hard to make out). I don't know if they were married in Ireland or New York. Theirfirst child Johanna was born in NY in 1865. Other children were Cornelius (1872), Clinton (1874) and Daniel (1879) all born in NY.

Based on children's birthplace and age, I assume he emigrated to US around 1860. His occupation in NY was a blacksmith.

The family story (with no corrobative evidence!) is that he emigrated from Sligo, but it seems that Cork or Kerry are more likely.

His parents are listed as Daniel and Mary on his death certificate.

I'm trying to determine where in Ireland he came from and hopefully, connect with family still in Ireland.

If anyone has any information it is greatly appreciated!

Regards,

Jim Spillane

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I would agree that Cork and Kerry are more likely than Sligo.

There are two sites to search for Cork and Kerry church records. The free site www.irishgenealogy.ie has Co. Kerry church records plus records for the Diocese of Cork and Ross which is primarily the RC parishes in the south and west of Cork. The subscription site Roots Ireland has the RC records for the Diocese of Cloyne which is primarily the RC parishes in the north and east of Cork.

I located a record on Roots Ireland which fits the data you provided. The RC parish is Conna which is in northeast Cork near the Co. Waterford border. This Cornelius had three younger siblings but it looks like the first Mary died young: Mary 1847 Mary 1849 Owen 1851  All three records show Ballycullane townland which is in Mogeely civil parish.

The related civil parishes to Conna would be Mogeely and Knockmourne and in the 1852 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Mogeely parish there was a Daniel Spillane in Slieveadoctor townland.  There were no Spillane records shown in Ballycullane but there was a Patrick Broderick in Ballycullane      Presumably a relation to Mary Broder. http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/cork/mogeely.htm ;

In any event, it appears that your family likely came from Mogeely civil parish with two possible townlands.

Let me know what questions you have.

Thank you so much for your answer and the info!  It is the first break I’ve had in years.  I’m going to check out the info you sent and see where it takes me.

Roger: I will be traveling to Ireland this April and plan to visit the area. There are Spillane's buried in Ballynoe cemetery. Would you happen to know who administers the cemetery? I'd like to reach out and see if I can find out who may be buried there. As an aside, I believe the Mogeely Spillanes are my ancestors based on a preponderance of circumstantial evidence. I would not have made the connection without the help you gave me several years ago! Jim Spillane

Jim: The cemetery is adjacent to St. Catherine's church in Ballynoe. I think I would e-mail the church and see if they can help. https://cloynediocese.ie/parish-conna/ FYI. I live in the States. Roger
