Corley from Westport and Kilmeena
Hello,
I'm very excited to join Irelandxo and to learn about and share information information regarding the Corleys from Westport and Kilmeena.
The Corleys came from the town of Westport in County Mayo. My great grandfather Franciss parents were Patrick Corley (1808 1871) and Mary Ellen Corley nee Keary (c1816-1880). Patrick and Mary Ellen had seven children: Thomas, James, Maria, Michael, Catherine, John Joseph and Francis.
Francis Corley was the youngest son of Patrick and Ellen. He was baptised in the familys parish church in County Mayo on 30 July 1855. His Godparents were William and Maria Corley.
The Corleys lived in Bridge Street which crosses the Carrow Beg River and worshipped at St Marys Catholic Church in The Mall.
Francis trained as a stonemason like his brothers John Joseph, Michael and Thomas. He was the last son to leave Ireland. When his mother passed away he erected their parents monument in the Old Kilmeena Cemetery, Co Mayo. He followed his brothers John Joseph, James, Michael and Thomas, and his sister Catherine, who came to Australia. Francis was sponsored by Edward Scanlon, Catherines husband. He arrived in Sydney aboard the Chenor 9 July, 1882. (New South Wales, Australia, Unassisted Immigrant Passenger Lists, 1826-1922)
Francis married our great grandmother Annie Geraghty (officially listed as Kate in the immigration record). She was born in the town of Roscommon, in County Roscommon Ireland around 1869. Her father Patrick was born in 1829 and her mother Kate Moran was born around 1837. Patricks parents were Michael Geraghty and Anne Naughton born in the 1700s. Annie (Kate) Moran was born in Correal, Athleague in County Roscommon to Nicholas and Anne (Kate) Moran.
