Connors

I had a lot of messages on the Connors message board and Kilmeen/Kanturk parish but can find none of them. They were posted before June of this year. Since then I have discovered the National Library Parish website and have done extensive research there. Why can't I find my old messages?

This website seems to be getting harder to navigate. I had to change my password again today after just changing it yesterday. It's quite frustrating. I couldn't even find the reply that answered my above query.

My previous posts were, I believe, around June of this year and had to do with Henry Connors/Conners. He was baptized in Kanturk Catholic Parish May 1830. His parents were Owen Conners and Catherine Rourke. I want to start researching here again and continue where I left off. The information in the newly added National Library of Ireland Catholic Parish website is staggering! But even there sadly, the pages for Kanturk May of 1830 do not display a Henry Conners' Baptism as some of the pages are out of order and some are nearly impossible to read. The May 1830 date I got from the Roots Ireland site which is powered by the Mallow Heritage Center. I emailed the National Library and they are looking into this for me and agreed with me that there is something outof synch with that particular entry. I will say however that the Library's website displays documents that I never thought I would be privy to.

Any help you can give me would be appreciated.

Sincerely,

Kathleen Connors Hartley

Welcome back!

We seem to have Connors messages back to 2011. What were the subject lines of your messages?

Dear Clare,

Perhaps I'm getting the hang of responding to these posts. And I was using a google email previously so that may be part of the signing in problem.

The above posts you sited are mine. I have since done tons of research on the National Library Parish website and will attempt to download it. It comes from the Ballyhea Parish and notes a marriage between a "Harry" Connors and "Joan" Mahoney with one witness being a Dan Connor on 21 November of 1857. I feel confident this is Henry and Johanna's marriage despite the misspelling of their names. I also feel very confident that this Dan is his brother who lived next door to him in Wales in 1881. Sadly, because I have not visited the Ireland Reaching Out website for several months, I will have to get reaquainted with it and the research I was previously pursuing. Additionally I am still waiting to actually "lay eyes" on Henry Connors' Baptismal Records from Kanturk Catholic Parish that the Roots Ireland website notes as being 2 May 1830. Someone at the Mallow Heritage Center must have actually seen this record, but as I noted before the National Library Parish website records do not bare this out as they appear to be out of order or the pages "got stuck" together.

I would love to find definitive proof of Henry' birth or baptism not just something that is in modern day print on a Roots Ireland website that I can't back-up with a visual of the actual document.

Thank you for being so prompt at always answering my posts.

Regards,

Kathleen Connors Hartley

Hi Kathleen

I had a look through the NLI baptisms from 1822 up to 1834 in case Henry had slipped in there but there is no sign of him. It is such a pity as his brother and sister are listed. I would love to know if the NLI staff get back to you on this

All the best

I, too, found all his brothers and sisters but am still determined to find Henry.

I did contact the NLI and they got back with me in short order.

Here is the person who contacted me.---

She agreed with me that the Kanturk documents are not only out of order but in some cases impossible to read. They informed me that they will certainly look into it, but in the meantime I should contact the Cloyne Diocese, specifically Kanturk, which I have now done twice, most recently today. Additionally she said that each particular parish still retains the original records. I guess that would make sense.

Here is the email I used to contact Kanturk Parish---gerrymallow1@gmail.com

I will let you know if/when I get more info.

Again, I appreciate your quick response.

As an addendum to my above post and after contacting the Mallow Heritage Center, Susanna Russell at the Center told me to contact Father Jackie Corkery at the Kanturk Parochial House. I went through about 3 or 4 sources to get this info. I emailed Father Cockery with no response. I sent a letter to the Kanturk Parochial House on February 3 and even called and left a message informing him to expect a letter from me requesting his help. So far I have received no response of any kind. If I lived in Ireland I would just drive there and get them myself. Can you give me any insight into what I should do next?   I pray that this Father Corkery or a secretary at the church there can help me. I really don't know what else to do. Does Ireland Reaching Out have any contacts there?

Thanks in advance,

Kathy Connors Hartley

Roger,

Tlhis sounds like a good idea and I appreciate that you sent me a link. I am going to follow up with the Library and see how it goes.

I contacted the Kanturk Library and they were unable to help me except to tell me to try and contact Fr. Corkery which I have already done, even leaving a message. Today I called Fr. Boyle and only got voice mail. I hesitate leaving another message in the event that if will only seem petty and make them feel like I am "bugging" them and ultimately get me nowhere.  Over the weekend, I used the "free till March 7th" Find My Past hoping that they might have a better copy of Henry's Baptismal Records. They didn't even have his Baptismal Records despite their claiming they have these records on their website. My guess is they probably couldn't read them either. I am considering doing a DNA Test through Ancestry and asking my second cousin in Wales to do the same (she is a known descendant of Henry), but I hesitate after reading all the negative reviews regarding the testing. Most people, it seems, who go this route are looking for their ethnicity. As Henry may have been my "step" great grandfather, doing the DNA would give me some closure with this. Although I will say, I would probably seek Henry's family out in Ireland as I have ALWAYS felt a bond there.

When do you think you will have a liason in Kanturk who can help me? This is beyond frustrating. I would fly/drive there myself but it would cost me a fortune when all that needs to be done is for someone there to open a book and make a copy.

Forgive my ranting. I am just so frustrated always hitting brick walls.

Kathy Connors Hartley

Kathy:

I have tested with both Ancestry and Family Tree DNA and much prefer FamilyTree. Better analytical tools and you are going to find that people are looking for family connections. Not everyone responds to e-mails but my experience has  been more positive compared to Family Tree. I don't have my parish liaison file at this time but maybe Clare will have a suggestion.

Hi Kathy and Roger

I have just left messages on both parish phones and will ring their mobile numbers later this afternoon if I don't hear back from them. I might be able to find someone close to Kanturk who could intervene for us, will get back to you.

Dear Clare and Roger,

Thank you both so much for always being there for me and going the extra mile. I so hope we get the results I have been praying for. Keep me posted. Clare, thank you for making the phone calls on my behalf and for your tenacity!!

Kathy, our Mallow Volunteer says that Henry's baptism is available on the NLI site but it is very faint:

Fr Brian just called me back and he is going to check the register this weekend and post a registered copy of the certificate to my home address in Galway. If you email me at cdoyle@irelandxo.com with your postal address I will forward it on to you straight away.

All the best

I am now back on this website after a long reprieve. I am now looking for Owen Connors (last known location) who married Catherine Rourke in the RC Parish of Liscarrol in the Cloyne Diocese. All records of their children are from the same ROMAN CATHOLIC diocese.

Baptisms

23 Aug 1818-Daniel- Ballyclough and Kilbrin

7 May 1820-Julia- Ballyclough and Kilbrin

8 Sep 1822-Edmond-Kanturk and Cooleavota. Address is Bawnmore

24 Apr 1824-William-Kanturk and Cooleavota. Address is Bawnmore

1826-Maybe a missing child here I have been unable to find.

9 May 1828-Patrick-Kanturk and Cooleavota. Address is Lackaleigh.

2 May 1830-Henry-Kanturk and Cooleavota

26 Sep 1832-Catherine-Kanturk and Cooleavota

9 Nov 1834-Ellen-Kanturk and Cooleavota.

I am lucky enough to have at 2 townland names. I am pretty sure I found Owen in the Tithe Applotment Books living in Bawnmore or Banemore which I think is in the Civil Parish of Kilbrin. There is only ONE Lackaleigh in the Civil Parish of Subulter. After this the family seems to have disappeared. I am hard pressed to believe that after 1834 they had no more children. Did Catherine die? Or did they just move and I can't find them? I have used "Roots Ireland" and can't find any more children. I have also use "SWilson's" to reference Civil Parishes, Catholic Parishes and Townlands. SWilson's site states that the Civil Parishes associated with the Roman Catholic Parish of Kanturk are Clonfert, Kilcorcoran and Kilroe, but the only Bawnmore I can find is in the Civil Parish of Kilbrin. I'm not sure what to do next given that Griffith's in Cork was done in 1851 and 1852 and that's a lot of years with nothing in between. Any help you can give me would be apprciated. Correct any of the "facts" I have posed if I am in error and please point me in the right direction. I would like to make a trip to Ireland this August and meet any family I have there. Henry is the only one I know of that came to the US.

Sincerely,

Kathleen Connors Hartley
