CONNELL and DUNN/E heritage

Hello, I live in Australia and am researching the parentage of my 2 x great grandparents James Connell and Jane Dunn/e. I have no information on their Irish heritage.

Some decades ago my research indicated James arrived in Port Phillip on 16/4/1844 aboard the Sea Queen having sailed from Cork on 4/1/1844. He came on the Bounty scheme. The ship’s manifest said he was about 23 and a Roman Catholic from County Cork. He died at the age of 94 on 20/12/1909 in Victoria.

Jane was sent to Australia on the Famine Orphan girl scheme. She sailed from Plymouth on the New Liverpool arriving in Pt Phillip on 9/8/1849. She was said to be 18, a Roman Catholic, born in Ireland and had been in the Wexford, New Ross workhouse. She died on 11/9/1893 at 66 years of age.

They were married in Melbourne, Victoria, on 9th June 1850 and had about 10 children. They have many descendants in Australia. There is very little information on people's Ancestry trees but I like to verify what I put in my tree.

I will hopefully visit Ireland next year and would really like to see where they may have come from.

I would be very grateful for any help you can give me.

Deborah,

There are 64 trees on Ancestry. Most of them suggest he came over in 1841. The ship's list identifies he was from Tyrone. That said, some trees have him born in Cork with various parents. Was he Protestant? I was not able to find the Sea Queen. As you noted, the ship's passenger list shows he was from Cork. You might contact the Australian government for marriage and death records. They might have parents' names.

Here are three Jane/Joan/Johanna Dunnes baptized in Wexford in the 1820s and 1830s. (Joan and Johanna are variants of Jane.)

Two of these children had fathers named John, and Jane had a son John, which might be a clue for you.

Some of the trees on Ancestry suggest the 1836 baptism. She was married in 1850 and would have been 14 years old.

Thank you very much for the information you’ve sent me Mary.

Yes, my James Connell is the one you’ve listed. I believed him to be Roman Catholic as they were married in the Catholic Church in Melbourne in 1850 and then their first son was baptized in the same Catholic Church. On his death certificate in 1909, a Catholic minister was at the burial. The details on his death certificate were given by one of his sons who reported James was 94, Parents unknown, born in Cork and had spent 45 years in Victoria. He married Jane Dunn at the age of 22. The ages of the children didn’t make a lot of sense as Mary his eldest was said to be 55 and the youngest one Daniel was said to be 31. I can believe the son wouldn’t know many of the historical facts but his siblings ages don’t correspond with what is on Jane’s death certificate when she died in 1893 as the children were listed as Mary being the eldest ant 46 and the youngest one Daniel 30.

My original research many years ago showed a James Connell sailed on the Sea Queen. However, the dates didn’t match up and I wondered whether this was just a mistake because he wasn’t  literate. Do you think that could be the case or am I just wrong?

They were on the goldfields in Victoria for quite some years before settling in Daylesford and along with others in their family are buried in unmarked graves.

The details for Johanna Dunne would match up with Jane’s age.

If she was in the New Ross workhouse where would I look for those records?

Thank you for the suggested research sites.

You and the other researchers certainly help a lot of people.

Deborah
