Colosky Surname

Hello everyone,

My name is Amanda. I am searching for any information regarding the Colosky name. I have gathered a few tidbits here and there but not enough to piece things together. My father's name is Rick Harry Colosky, born in Michigan, USA. Really the only information I have been able to get from other family members researching is that it is an Irish name and there was a castle in the Colosky name seized due to back taxes. My parents divorced when I was an infant and I have had little to no contact of the Colosky family over the past 20 years. Any information would be great!

Thank you to any and all of your help,

Sincerely,

Amanda

Amanda,

Colosky does not sound an Irish name to me. More Eastern European. I had a look in the 1901 Irish census and there’s no-one of that name living in Ireland. I suspect that if your family did originate in Ireland, then the name has changed over the years. Difficult to suggest what it might have been though.

You possibly need to trace the family back through US records to try and find an ancestor who was born in Ireland and see how the name was spelled then. You might also find census, death or naturalisation records that indicate where the person came from in Ireland.

Amanda,

I have Colosky ancestors from Michigan, where I have found numerous Coloskys both related and unrelated.  Exactly where was your father born in Michigan?

The Coloskys that I am related to spent at least 2 generations in Ontario before emmigrating to Michigan in the mid to late 1800s.  Record keeping in Canada during the period in which they arrived at/lived in Canada is very sketchy.  The only thing that I can find that mentions ethnic origin (or pertains to it) is for Benjamin Colosky, my Great-great-Grandfather, b 19 Sep 1822 in Huron County, Ontario, d. 8 Feb 1909 in Gilmore Township, Isabella County.  On the 1851 and 1871 censuses in Ontario, he is noted as being a Lutheren.  I would trust this as accurate--the Canadians were diligent in tracking church affiliation.  In the 1851 census, it does not ask for ethnicity, but in the 1871 census, his ethnic origin is specified as Ireland.  A Lutheran from Ireland seems highly suspect, but if you read up on the history of the Lutheran Church, it has had a small but continuous presence in Ireland since the 17th century, with many pastors coming from Germany.  An obvious place to start looking is through the Lutheran Church in Ireland.  It could very well be that the Coloskys in Ireland originally were from Germany!  I have recently found this out and have not had the opportunity to check this source.

Let me know if this helps and/or if you find out anything.

My married name is Colosky. What I know is my husband's grandfather came from Poland at 3yrs old. The family name was originally 17 letters long. There was a newspaper article framed and hanging on the wall for many years and it came up missing or I'd share the spelling with you. They settled in Chicago late 1920s.
I'm curious what you were able to uncover.
