Coghlan and Bergin - Kings County Ireland

Hi!  My 3x great grandfather was Michael Coghlan (or variant spelling).  Any records I have located for him suggest Kilcolgan More or Kilcolgan Beg, Kings County.

I have located a probate record for a Michael Coghlan in 1888, granted to Margaret Bergin.  I am trying to establish if he is my Michael or not.  I have traced some of Margaret's family tree.

Margaret Coghlan married Dan Bergin in 1867.  Dan Bergin gave Coolishill as his place of residence with a father Michael Bergin.

Margaret Coghlan was the daughter of Michael Coghlan, farmer - her residence was given as Ballyroe.

So far I have found five children born to Margaret and Dan - Margaret born 1868; Mary born 1869; Bridget born 1874; Catherine born 1876; Michael born in 1882.

I think Margaret Bergin nee Coghlan died in 1899 - widowed still residing at Ballyroe.

I think Dan Bergin may have died 1891 - possibly at Money.

Margaret Bergin married Jeremiah Cunningham in 1894 - both gave their residence as 'Ballyroe".

Mary Bergin married Michael Troy in 1896 - Michael gave his residence as County Glass; Mary gave her residence as Ballyroe.

Can anyone tell me where the farm 'Ballyroe" was located in Kings County please?

I have also looked for these people on Ancestry and found nothing to help me.  Any guidance would be appreciated.  Kind regards, Kate

Michael appears likely to have come from the townland of Clontaglass. This looks to be his family in the 1901 census:

There were 2 Troy farms there close by.

Mary came from the townland of Ballyroe. (Note that’s not the name of the farm - it may not have had a name - but of the townland it was in. 5 households in Ballyroe in 1901. Just 1 Bergin household:

You can see where they are by using Griffiths VAluation’s maps.

Hi Elwyn, thank you for your message.  I will check out the location of this townland on Griffith Valuations.

I am not entirely convinced that I am on the right track or that I have the right people. I have been building a family tree to see if I can find a connection between the Bergin family to my Michael Coghlan.   Bit of a long story but my Michael Coghlan farmed land at Kilcolgan More and Kilcolgan Beg (as per Griffiths Valuations).  Michael and his wife had at least four or five children including a Margaret.  I was lead to believe that Margaret, along with sisters Catherine and Rosanna had come to Australia - although to this day I have not yet found Margaret or Catherine which is why I check out every one I come across just on the off chance they could be mine.  It has been a very long road yielding very little result at this time.  There are no trees on Ancestry for any descendant of Daniel Bergin and Margaret Coghlan at this time.  My Coghlan ancestors certainly like to keep their air of mystery - and keep me on my toes (so to speak).. Thanks again Elwyn.
