Closing the circle - Irish Ancestors, Hunt and Mannion/ Manion/ Mangan/ Mongaun

Hello.

This was my great grandmother Maggie Mould (on the left), her parents were from Ireland, and I’m wanting to find out about them. I don’t have much to go on yet, but luck has been with me so far, and I’m hopeful it’ll stay awhile.

Her parent’s were Ann and Laurence Hunt who arrived from Ireland/Liverpool into Congleton in Cheshire around 1850.

Ann’s maiden name on baptism records was recorded as Mannion, Manion and Mongaun. All their children (including Maggie) were baptised Roman Catholics.

I have loved Irish writing/poetry, wanted to come to Ireland and it was by chance, I found out I had Irish heritage and I was surprised, but then again, I wasn’t. That’s the story  - please, I would love to hear any thoughts and ideas that might help. Thanks

Not sure we will be able to locate a baptismal record. Two questions. Was she baptized Ann Mannion or Ann Hunt since you show her parents names as Ann and Laurence Hunt. Also, do you have an approximate year of birth for Ann? Thanks!

Hello Roger

This is all I know.

My mother was Phyllis, the daughter of Mary, who was the daughter of Maggie , who was the daughter of Ann. Who was Ann, and who was her mother?

I know I am the gg-granddaughter of Ann Hunt (nee Mannion - * Mannion also recorded as - Monging, Maungan in places) and Laurence Hunt who emigrated from Ireland. There is no record of which parish they came from, when they left, nor where and when they were married.

According to census - Ann and Laurence lived in Burslem Street 1871 and Silver Street 1881 in Congleton, Cheshire. Ann was born in Ireland 1821/1822 and Laurence was died in Quarter Jan - March 1856 aged 42yrs.

Their children were:
- Thomas Hunt (son) Baptism 03 Nov 1850 Congleton/ died young?
- Ann Hunt (daughter) Christening 06 Nov 1853 Congleton
- Laurence Hunt (son) Baptism 30 Dec 1855 Congleton
- Catarina Hunt (daughter) Baptism 25 Mar 1858 Congleton
- Margarita (Maggie) Hunt (daughter) Baptism 28 Nov 1861 Congleton

gedmatch: FF1569187/Jak and names: Mannion/Hunt

Can you help?

Thanks

Su:

I searched on the subscription site Roots Ireland and did not locate a marriage record for Ann Mannion and Laurence Hunt. So either they were married in a church that no longer has records back to the 1840s or they were married in England. They may have also emigrated separately and met in England.

The surname Mannion in the mid-19th century was mainly found in Galway and Roscommon. Hunt was found in many counties with Mayo, Sligo, Waterford and Roscommon being the top counties for the name but was also found in other counties.

I did find a February 23 1822 baptismal record in Ballygar parish in northeast Co. Galway for an Ann Mannin with father Thomas and mother Margaret McDermott but there is no way at this point to confirm this record. Keep in mind that many parishes do not have records back to 1822.

One question on your information. You have Laurence dying in 1856 but the last two children were born in 1858 and 1861?

Hello Roger

Good to hear back from you. Sorry - Laurence died in 1863, that must

have been a typo. And it didn't enter my head that Ann and Laurence may have met in England.

Who are you Roger, if you don't mind me asking? I am just learning to use gedmatch, so that might help do you think?

I'm one of the volunteers that help to answer messages posted to the IRO message board. Sure Gedmatch might be helpful. I also belong to that site. The main problem I experience is getting people to respond to my messages. Another site I would suggest when you get the time is DNA Painter dnapainter.com  This site allows you to "paint" DNA matches to particular chromosomes.

Thanks Roger. I think I need to do some ground work when I get time before I ask any more questions. stay safe.

Su, It would appear we are related. My mother Beverly Mould ( married Jackson) was the daughter of Larry Mould. Larry was the son of Alice Mould who's mother was Maggie Mould ( born Hunt) . Maggie was the daughter of Ann and Lawrence Hunt who lived on Silver St Congleton Cheshire but originally from Ireland born circa 1821. I have also been trying to discover more about our Irish roots.
