Cliffords of Raphoe

Thomas Clifford lived and died at Irish Row in Raphoe town. He married Martha McMenamin and they had 14 children, one of whom was my grandfather, Anthony. The family were pig dealers, later embellished to "horse dealers" :-)
In 1920 Anthony left for London and never returned, passing away in 1974.
In 1989 I researched the family history and it took me to Raphoe, where I met Anthony's elder brother, Patrick, and younger sister Martha, still living in the family house at Irish Row. They still had a picture of him on a dresser, some 70 years later, and called him a "bad lad" for not keeping in touch. The housewas cosy but run down with thick stone walls. Martha generously cooked a potato dinner on a primus using water from a rear well. Sadly, they both passed away some years later.

The records are patchy and show several Clifford families in Raphoe, with connections in Convoy, Strabane and Derry. They married into the Patton, McMenamin and Quinn families.

Any Clifford relatives still living in Raphoe? Please send a message!

Six and a half years since I posted my plea above!

Time flies.

believe the Cliffords of Co. Donegal were native Irish who anglicized their surname.

Is there anyone researching Cluvane or O'Clumhain?
