Clabby Brennan

Hello, I finally located my great great grandmother, Eleanor Clabby born June 10 1842 in Strokestown, Lissonuffy, Roscommon.

She is the daughter of James Clabby and Eleanora Brennan. She has an older sister Catherine born August 27, 1831 and an older brother John born July 18, 1834. These can also be baptism dates.

I cannot find the church where they were baptised nor any information on where James and Eleanor married. I figure it's sometime in 1830.

And burials! Does anyone know of the cemeteries in this area?

I will be visiting in September with my 90 year old mom and would love to make some progress in this area.

Are there any Clabby's out there??

Thanks

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

The RC parish was Strokestown and here is a link to the parish register  http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0552   You will see from the index that records start in October 1830 and it is very likely that James and Eleanora were married prior to October 1830 and it is also possible that their were children baptized before Catherine.

The current church is the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Strokestown and here is a link to the parish

I could not find James Clabby in the 1855 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Co. Roscommon. Don't know if he was deceased or had emigrated by 1855. My guess is that he may have come from Lissonuffy civil parish and there was a John Clabby listed in Erra townland Lissonuffy parish in the Griffiths.

Regarding cemeteries, you could e-mail the church and also look at this site.

I also did a Google search and found this posting in 2009 on an Ancestry bulleting board which I find interesting because it ties back to the Erra townland that I mentioned earlier.

Let me know what questions you have. I will contact our HQ about local contacts for your visit.

Classification: Query

I am kevin Clabby.
I am originally from Longford and now i live in south Roscommon. My grandfather is from a place called Erra in County Roscommon and moved to Longford where he raised his family including my father. My aunt Dympna moved to USA almost 50 years ago and she died last year in New Jersey where she lived in Clifden, Passaic County. She has left no family there.
My grandfathers brother went to US and settled in Montana and family from ther have visited Ireland but I have not met them.
There is a family of Clabby in Kilmore, Strokestown, County Roscommon. Strokestown is just a asmall country town and population would be about 1000. So it is not a city by any means.
i have not set about checking if those Clabbys are my relatives and indeed i have not followed the family tree at all.

Is any of this any help to you?

HI Roger,

Thanks so much for responding to my query.  I have finally made the plans the reservations and will be visiting Sept 10-17.  We are so excited to be back in Ireland!

I have been in touch with Fr. Eamonn O'Connor and he told me that Eleanor Clabby was baptized at the Immaculate Conception of Our Blessed Lady in Strokestown.  As you have confirmed, the records don't go back far enough to show the marriage of James Clabby and Eleanor Brennan.  I willl have to be content witht he fact that I will at least be seeing the church where my great great grandmother was baptized.

As for Kevin Clabby, he doesn't show as a DNA match on ancestry.  I have to assume there were many Clabbys running around Ireland and I can't be related to them all!

I will follow the clue for John Clabby in Erra townland.  Maybe he is one in the same John as Eleanor's brother!  There also have to be more children of this marriage.

thanks for you assistance.  If you are looking for anyone in the USA perhaps I can be of assistance!

Hi Kathleen,

Hope you're well. I'm also trying to find a Clabbys from this area. My relative is John Henry Clabby who was born in Strokestown in 1826. I don't know much else, but his father was Nicholas, who I think was born around 1808. I'm assuming that even if our relatives aren't immediate family that there will be a connection. Would be interested to swap notes as I'd love to be able to piece together a bit more about the Clabbys from this area. Best wishes, Liz
